The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical weather warning for residents of Delhi-NCR and its neighboring states. According to the latest update, an orange alert has been sounded for the next three hours, predicting a severe thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall. The weather office has cautioned that wind speeds during this period could escalate to a range of 90 to 100 kilometers per hour, posing potential risks to commuters and infrastructure.

Current Weather Situation in North India

While Delhi-NCR prepares for the impending storm, several districts in Haryana and Punjab are already experiencing intense rainfall. This follows a pattern of volatile weather seen just a day prior, when parts of the national capital region witnessed sudden dust storms and heavy downpours. Meteorologists suggest that this atmospheric instability is likely to persist until June 13, keeping the region on high alert. Amidst the scorching heatwave that has gripped North India, the IMD has shared encouraging news regarding the Southwest Monsoon. The monsoon is reportedly advancing at a rapid pace. After its arrival in Kerala, it has now made an entry into Bihar. Significant progress has been noted in various parts of the southern and south-eastern states, while the monsoon has successfully covered remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, while also moving into sections of West Bengal.

Impact of Western Disturbance

The current spell of rain across the northwestern states is attributed to an active Western Disturbance, which is expected to influence the weather until June 13. Specifically, on June 12, the IMD has predicted thunderstorms and hailstorms in several localities. Over the next two to three days, the monsoon is projected to advance further into the central Arabian Sea, more districts of Maharashtra, and the remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. It's also expected to cover more areas in West-Central and Northwest Bay of Bengal, Bihar, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh are also on the verge of welcoming the monsoon rains.

Detailed Regional Forecast

In North India, heavy rainfall is anticipated in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand on June 12. Himachal Pradesh is likely to see heavy downpours on June 12 and 13. For the plains, heavy rain is forecast for Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab on June 12, while Western Uttar Pradesh was expected to see significant activity on June 11. The IMD has issued a comprehensive warning for all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh, citing potential storms, rain, lightning, and hailstorms. A new Western Disturbance is expected to become active within 24 hours, intensifying pre-monsoon activities in the state for the next three days. Between June 13 and 17, scattered rainfall is expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi. Western Uttar Pradesh will see rain from June 12 to 17, while Eastern UP will experience it on June 12, 13, and 17. Rajasthan is also set for a rainy spell from June 12 to 17. Notably, on June 12, hailstorms are predicted for Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and both Western and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Dust storms are likely in Rajasthan on June 12 and 13.

Central and Eastern India Weather

Central India is also under a rain watch. From June 12 to 17, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and West Madhya Pradesh will see scattered rain. Chhattisgarh is expected to receive rainfall on June 11 and from June 13 to 17, with heavy rain specifically on June 12. Thunderstorms and lightning are predicted for Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha between June 12 and 15. In Eastern India, the IMD forecasts rain for Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim from June 12 to 17. Heavy rain is expected in the Gangetic plains, Jharkhand, and Odisha on June 12 and 13, while Bihar may witness very heavy rainfall during this period. The IMD noted that if the monsoon continues its current pace, it could reach Delhi earlier than expected.
