The weather pattern across the national capital region of Delhi and its surrounding areas has undergone a complete transformation. The rain accompanied by strong winds in several parts of Delhi-NCR on Saturday night has made the weather pleasant, marking the onset of a mild winter chill, commonly known as pink cold, across the region. According to information shared by the meteorological department, upcoming weather systems are expected to bring further changes to the weather conditions in the coming days. In the first week of November, a new weather system could once again bring dense clouds over the skies of Haryana and Delhi-NCR, along with strong possibilities of thunder and lightning accompanied by rainfall.
Control on Pollution and Improvement in Air Quality
The most significant impact of the strong winds and rainfall on Saturday night was witnessed on the pollution levels. For the past three consecutive days, the air quality in Delhi-NCR remained continuously in the 'poor' category, which forced authorities to implement strict GRAP-1 restrictions across the region. However, a major relief came as wind speeds picked up from Saturday evening, causing a noticeable improvement in the AQI, while according to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board, the air quality improved and was recorded at a moderate level of 191. Following the rains late Saturday night across various areas including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and parts of Delhi, Sunday morning witnessed much cleaner air, while weather experts estimate that due to this wash-out effect of strong winds and rain, pollution levels will remain under control for the next two to three days.
Reasons Behind the Sudden Weather Change
According to meteorologists, a strong weather system is driving this sudden shift in climate. Currently, a western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation is active over northern Pakistan and its adjoining areas. Due to its direct influence, another cyclonic circulation has formed over regions in western Rajasthan and Haryana, while driven by this active weather system, several districts of Haryana such as Mahendragarh and Jhajjar, as well as Churu and Alwar in Rajasthan, witnessed severe rainfall accompanied by hailstorms on Saturday. The very same system produced widespread effects in Delhi-NCR on Saturday night, altering the local weather drastically.
Temperature Drop and Onset of Mild Winter Chill
The continuous blowing of cold winds and overnight rain have led to a noticeable drop in the minimum temperatures across Delhi-NCR. According to the Safdarjung meteorological observatory, the minimum temperature has now come close to normal, increasing the slight shivering sensation and the feel of early winter chill during the early morning and late evening hours. Weather experts have further indicated that a fresh western disturbance is likely to become active again during the final days of October and the beginning of November. Under its influence, weather changes and rainfall are expected to persist across Haryana, NCR, and Delhi, which will further intensify the cold conditions in the region. This timely shift has brought much-needed relief to residents struggling with heavy pollution, offering clean air alongside a refreshing drop in temperature.
