Diplomatic Shift: India Strengthens Ties With Pakistan's Allies Amid Islamabad's Peace Initiative

A significant shift is unfolding in South Asian geopolitics, while while Pakistan attempts to project itself as a messenger of peace by hosting leaders from the United States and Iran following their ceasefire, India is operating on a different diplomatic pitch. New Delhi has intensified its engagement with countries that have historically shared close ties with Pakistan or where bilateral relations had recently faced challenges. This strategic outreach includes key nations such as Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Resetting Relations with Bangladesh

Following the political transition in Bangladesh and the departure of the previous administration, bilateral ties entered a period of uncertainty. However, both nations are now working to chart a new course of cooperation. Bangladesh's Foreign Minister, Khalilur Rahman, recently visited India and held extensive talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. This marks the first high-level visit from a senior member of the new government in Dhaka, while according to official statements, the discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations across various sectors and maintaining close contact on regional and global developments, effectively moving past recent tensions.

Diplomatic Re-engagement with Turkey

Relations between India and Turkey have been strained for several years due to Ankara's stance on the Kashmir issue and its military support to Pakistan. In a notable development, the two countries are now working toward restoring diplomatic normalcy. The 12th round of Foreign Office Consultations (FoC) was recently held in Delhi, led by Turkey's Deputy Foreign Minister Baris Ekinci and India's Secretary (West) Sibi George. This dialogue, the first of its kind since 2022, signifies a mutual intent to explore economic and diplomatic cooperation despite past disagreements on sensitive geopolitical issues.

Humanitarian Cooperation with Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan has traditionally been a staunch ally of Pakistan, particularly in strategic and military matters. However, recent events have paved the way for a more pragmatic relationship between New Delhi and Baku. During the Middle East crisis, Azerbaijan played a crucial role in the evacuation of 215 Indian nationals stranded in Iran. India officially expressed its gratitude for this humanitarian assistance during a meeting between Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and India's newly appointed Ambassador, Abhay Kumar, while this interaction suggests a shift toward functional cooperation over historical friction.

Strategic Significance of the UAE Visit

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the 11th and 12th of this month. This visit is strategically timed following the US-Iran ceasefire and aims to review the 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' between the two nations. According to officials, the primary objectives include securing energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, reviewing the regional security situation, and ensuring the safety of the Indian diaspora. The UAE remains a critical partner for India, maintaining balanced relations with both New Delhi and Islamabad.

Securing Regional Interests and Energy Corridors

India's current foreign policy reflects a calculated move to expand its influence in regions where Pakistan has traditionally held sway. By engaging with Turkey and Azerbaijan, New Delhi is demonstrating its willingness to open channels of communication even with nations that have previously opposed its positions, while the effort to 'reset' ties with the new government in Bangladesh is also a vital component of this strategy, aimed at balancing regional dynamics. These diplomatic maneuvers are designed to safeguard India's long-term interests in energy security and regional stability amidst a rapidly changing global landscape.
