Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has openly acknowledged the lapses within the National Testing Agency (NTA) that led to the controversial NEET paper leak. In a significant admission, the Minister stated that the breach occurred due to the very individuals who were entrusted with the critical responsibility of translating the examination papers. He described those involved in the paper leak as "sinners" and assured the nation that every single person responsible for this crime would face the full force of the law. Pradhan emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring such an incident never recurs, highlighting that the ongoing investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is focused on bringing all culprits, regardless of their status or power, to justice.
Accountability and Investigation
During a detailed discussion regarding the NEET paper leak case, Dharmendra Pradhan expressed deep regret over the breach of trust. He pointed out that the teachers who were assigned the task of translating the papers were the ones who compromised the integrity of the examination by leaking the content. The Minister reiterated that the CBI is currently conducting a thorough probe into the matter, while he made it clear that the legal net is closing in on the perpetrators, stating that anyone found guilty, no matter how powerful they might be, will be brought within the ambit of the law. The government's primary focus is to restore the sanctity of the examination process and provide justice to the millions of students affected by this breach.
Implementation of Radhakrishnan Committee Recommendations
To prevent future occurrences of such leaks, the Education Ministry is actively implementing the recommendations of the Radhakrishnan Committee, while minister Pradhan revealed that 70 percent of the committee's short-term recommendations have already been put into effect. One of the most significant changes involves the selection of examination centers. He noted that prior to 2024, not all examination centers were located in government buildings. However, following the committee's advice, there has been a strategic shift. While the initial goal for the 2026 NEET was to have 92 percent to 95 percent of exams conducted in government buildings, the government has now decided that 100 percent of the examination centers will be situated in government-owned facilities to ensure better security and oversight.
Dismantling the Paper Mafia Network
The Education Minister issued a stern warning to the "paper mafia" operating across the country. He stated that the government is determined to dismantle the entire network of copy mafias using every possible measure. Pradhan admitted that the situation becomes particularly challenging when individuals within the NTA itself are involved in such activities. He stressed that those who have broken the trust of the students and the nation will be punished without exception. Establishing accountability for everyone involved in the examination process is now a top priority for the central government, which aims to completely eradicate the influence of paper mafias from the Indian education system.
District-Level Monitoring and Fast-Track Hearings
In a move to tighten security, the Minister explained that the Radhakrishnan Committee suggested an administrative setup similar to that used during national elections. Consequently, the ministry has established a system where every examination center is monitored in coordination with the respective District Collector. This ensures real-time updates and a higher level of administrative control over the conduct of exams. Pradhan also addressed the difficulty of preventing leaks when translators memorize and then disseminate the paper, but he assured that comprehensive preparations are being made to tackle such sophisticated methods of cheating. On top of that, he clarified that the legal proceedings for the NEET paper leak case will be conducted through a fast-track process to ensure speedy justice.
Criticism of Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi
The Education Minister also took the opportunity to criticize the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Rahul Gandhi. Pradhan accused Gandhi of making statements without any factual basis, calling it unfortunate that the LoP presents groundless arguments. He described Gandhi as a leader with "double standards," pointing out contradictions in his stance. Pradhan noted that while Gandhi supports certain companies or processes when they work for his interests, he criticizes the same when implemented by national bodies like the CBSE. The Minister dismissed Gandhi's allegations as being devoid of any substance or truth, labeling his approach as inconsistent and fact-free.
