Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has "stolen" the elections in West Bengal and Assam with the assistance of the Election Commission. He extended his support to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's claim that 100 seats were looted in the state. Expressing his views on the social media platform 'X', Gandhi described the situation as a blatant case of institutional manipulation and democratic theft.

Support for Mamata Banerjee and Allegations of Seat Looting

Rahul Gandhi wrote on 'X' that there are clear instances of the BJP stealing the Assam and Bengal elections with the cooperation of the Election Commission. He stated, "We agree with Mamata ji. " The Congress leader further claimed that this tactic isn't new, asserting that similar patterns were observed in the Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Maharashtra assembly elections, as well as the previous Lok Sabha polls.

Setbacks for the INDIA Bloc and Congress's Kerala Victory

The assembly election results in West Bengal, Assam, and Tamil Nadu have come as a significant blow to the opposition INDIA bloc. The strongholds of two major regional components, the TMC and DMK, have been breached, while however, the victory in Kerala has provided a glimmer of hope for the Congress party. Kerala will now become the fourth state where Congress will have its own Chief Minister, adding to its existing governments in Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh.

Testing the Unity of the INDIA Alliance

These election results are expected to have a broad impact on national politics and will serve as a test for the unity of the INDIA alliance moving forward. Specifically, the Samajwadi Party (SP) faces a major challenge in countering the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The results in West Bengal are a setback not just for the TMC but for the entire opposition bloc. This follows another blow to the opposition when seven Rajya Sabha members from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) recently defected to the BJP.

Women's Reservation Context and Congress's Performance

The opposition alliance had recently shown unity when the constitutional amendment bill related to women's reservation and delimitation failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented on this, stating that women have taught a lesson to those who opposed the reservation. For Congress, while the Kerala win is a relief after losses in Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana, and Bihar, the crushing defeat in Assam is a negative sign as the party has remained out of power there for the last 10 years.

The election outcomes have raised questions about the future strategy and cohesion of the opposition alliance. Rahul Gandhi's allegations have once again sparked a debate over the impartiality of the Election Commission and electoral processes, while the BJP views the results as a mandate for its governance.
