In a major crackdown on the alleged nexus between law enforcement and organized crime, the Punjab Police have arrested former Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, while this high-profile arrest comes after Nagra was identified as a person of interest by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States. Following his apprehension, the accused inspector was transported to Jalandhar under stringent security measures, while the case against Nagra involves grave allegations of extorting millions of rupees from a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) family by leveraging his official position to issue threats of false criminal implications.
The FBI Investigation and Operation Hardball Revelations
The dismantling of this international extortion ring was initiated by a covert investigation conducted by the FBI, while through a specialized mission known as Operation Hardball, the American agency uncovered a disturbing connection between a serving Punjab Police officer and some of India's most notorious criminal elements. The findings indicated that Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra was an integral part of a global network that included the Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gangs. This syndicate specialized in identifying affluent families of Punjabi descent residing in foreign countries, particularly the United States. Once a target was identified, the group would use a combination of local police pressure and gangster-led intimidation to demand substantial sums of money.
Extortion of 400,000 Dollars from a Los Angeles Family
The specifics of the case against Nagra highlight a sophisticated method of coercion. During his tenure in Hoshiarpur, the inspector allegedly targeted a Punjabi family living in Los Angeles. He's accused of threatening to frame the family members in a fabricated murder case within Indian jurisdiction, while fearing the legal complications and the potential for harassment during visits to their homeland, the family was forced to comply with the extortion demands. The total amount extorted is reported to be 400,000 dollars, which translates to approximately 4 crore rupees. The FBI's investigation was so thorough that the agency expressed its commitment to prosecuting not only the gangsters involved but also the police official who facilitated the crime.
Internal Inquiry and Formal Arrest by Punjab Police
The intervention of the FBI prompted immediate action from the top brass of the Punjab Police. Recognizing the severity of the international implications, DIG Naveen Singla ordered the immediate removal of Nagra from his post as SHO, placing him in the police lines to prevent any interference with the investigation. A comprehensive probe was subsequently launched, headed by SP Vineet Ahlawat. The internal investigation meticulously reviewed the evidence provided by the FBI and the local circumstances of the case. Upon the conclusion of the probe, which found the allegations to be substantiated, an FIR was registered late Friday night. The charges against Nagra include various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and multiple counts of extortion, while his arrest followed shortly after the legal formalities were completed, marking a significant step in the state's efforts to purge criminal elements from its police force.
