A major disaster was averted at the Nampally Railway Station in Hyderabad on Friday evening when a massive fire broke out in two Third AC coaches of the Hyderabad-Jaipur Special Express. The incident, which occurred while the train was stationed at the platform, led to widespread panic and chaos among passengers and railway staff. The fire specifically affected the B-1 and B-2 coaches of the train, which were seen engulfed in flames and thick black smoke. Fortunately, despite the intensity of the blaze, no passengers were injured or killed in the accident, providing a significant relief to the railway authorities and the public.

Fire Erupts Minutes Before Scheduled Departure

According to official reports, the Hyderabad-Jaipur Special Express was scheduled to depart for Jaipur on Friday evening. While the scheduled departure time was noted as 7:50 PM, some railway officials mentioned the departure was set for 7:00 PM. The fire broke out at approximately 6:30 PM, just as the train was preparing for its journey. The blaze originated in the Third AC coach B-2 and rapidly spread to the adjacent B-1 coach. The sight of flames leaping from the stationary train at the platform caused immediate alarm throughout the station, as the departure time was drawing near and many passengers were already in the vicinity.

Panic Among Passengers and Immediate Response

As smoke began to billow from the coaches, a sense of panic gripped the passengers, while many who were already on board or near the train rushed to safety, fleeing towards the far ends of the platform. Eyewitnesses described a scene of frantic movement as people scrambled to distance themselves from the burning coaches. In a display of quick thinking, some passengers attempted to combat the fire using the fire extinguishers available on the train, while they reportedly broke the glass windows of the coaches to allow the smoke to escape and to gain better access to the seat of the fire, showing remarkable courage in the face of danger.

Firefighting Operations and Emergency Intervention

The efforts to contain the fire were bolstered by the proactive involvement of two passengers who utilized water pipes available at the station to douse the flames. Upon receiving the emergency alert, teams from the Railway Police and the Fire Department rushed to the spot. Firefighters launched a coordinated operation to bring the blaze under control. Due to the train being stationary at the platform and the relatively low occupancy in the affected coaches at that moment, the fire teams were able to manage the situation effectively, while within a short period, the fire was completely extinguished, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the train.

Investigation into the Cause of the Fire

Following the incident, senior railway officials conducted a thorough inspection of the charred B-1 and B-2 coaches. Preliminary findings suggest that a short circuit might have been the primary cause of the fire. However, the authorities have emphasized that a definitive conclusion will only be reached after a detailed investigation by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), while the railway administration has initiated a comprehensive probe into the matter to identify any lapses and ensure such incidents don't recur. In the aftermath of the fire, additional security and safety measures have been implemented at the station to ensure the well-being of all commuters.
