Flipkart, the e-commerce giant that has established a dominant presence in delivering smartphones, apparel, and groceries, is now preparing to enter the hot food delivery market. This strategic move comes at a time when the competition in the quick-commerce and 10-minute delivery space is intensifying. By entering this segment, Flipkart is set to provide direct competition to established players like Zomato and Swiggy. The company's master plan involves a phased rollout and integration with government-backed digital infrastructure to ensure a solid start.
Official Confirmation from Flipkart Leadership
The news of this expansion was confirmed by Kalyan Krishnamurthy, the CEO of Flipkart Group, during a recent interview with a news channel. According to Krishnamurthy, the company is scheduled to launch its food delivery service within the next few weeks, while the initial phase will involve testing the service in a few selected areas to monitor performance and operational efficiency. Based on the feedback received from customers during this pilot stage, the service will be refined and subsequently expanded to other cities on a larger scale.
Access and Integration Strategy
Flipkart plans to make this service easily accessible to its vast user base. Customers will be able to order food through the main Flipkart app, which already sees high daily traffic, while On top of that, the company intends to launch a dedicated application specifically for food delivery to provide a more focused user experience. A critical component of Flipkart's strategy is its integration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). By connecting with the ONDC network, Flipkart will gain immediate access to an extensive network of restaurants and delivery partners, Importantly reducing the time required to build a supply chain from scratch.
Building on the Success of Flipkart Minutes
The decision to venture into food delivery follows the successful performance of Flipkart's quick-commerce vertical, Flipkart Minutes. The company recently highlighted its rapid growth in this sector, having established over 1,000 micro-fulfillment centers across 130 cities in less than two years. Notably, Flipkart has observed a 42 times increase in demand within Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, indicating a strong appetite for fast delivery services beyond major metropolitan areas. This existing infrastructure and logistics expertise are expected to provide a solid foundation for the new food delivery venture.
The Competitive Landscape
The food delivery market in India is witnessing significant activity and new entrants. Recently, the ride-hailing platform Rapido launched its food delivery service under the name Ownly, claiming to charge zero commission from restaurants. Meanwhile, Swiggy has introduced a new feature called Toing, aimed at budget-conscious users. On the other hand, Deepinder Goyal, the founder of Zomato's parent company Eternal, has expressed that while new competitors may enter with heavy discounts, sustainable growth will only come from improving the restaurant supply chain. While Kalyan Krishnamurthy didn't reveal the exact pricing or discount strategy, he emphasized that Flipkart only enters categories where it can offer something new and provide a superior experience to its customers.
