The Indian government has officially addressed the recent wave of reports suggesting that informal or back-channel communications have been taking place between India and Pakistan, while foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has issued a definitive statement to clarify the situation following days of intense speculation. These rumors emerged against the backdrop of sustained tensions between the two nations, which have remained particularly high since the terror attack in Pahalgam. Despite the strained diplomatic atmosphere, reports had surfaced claiming that some level of unofficial engagement was occurring behind the scenes.
The Context of the Alleged Colombo Meeting
The speculation regarding a potential thaw in relations gained momentum after reports claimed that an informal meeting between delegations from India and Pakistan took place in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. This interaction was reportedly held on the sidelines of a Regional Security Conference organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). The news of this alleged meeting sparked widespread debate and raised questions about whether a secret diplomatic channel had been established to manage the complex bilateral relationship between the two neighbors, while however, the Ministry of External Affairs has now stepped in to provide the official version of events.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's Official Clarification
Addressing the reports of an informal meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the government doesn't accord any special significance to such events. He clarified that these are private programs organized by private parties and don't carry any official weight, while misri emphasized that the Indian government doesn't pay attention to these gatherings in a formal capacity. He further explained that the individuals from India who participate in these conferences—whether they're retired diplomats, retired military officers, or members of civil society—do so in their personal capacity. He stated that these individuals present their own views and perspectives and don't, in any way, represent the Government of India, nor are they authorized to do so.
Condemnation of Pakistan's Attacks on Afghanistan
In a separate but significant diplomatic development, India has strongly condemned the recent military actions taken by Pakistan against Afghanistan. The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement describing Pakistan's strikes as unprovoked and deliberate, while india has characterized these attacks as a direct threat to regional peace and stability, as well as a violation of Afghanistan's sovereignty. According to the Indian government, Pakistan is targeting Afghanistan as a tactic to divert the attention of its own public from its pressing internal issues. The gravity of the situation is underscored by the casualties reported from the incident. On June 28, Pakistani Air Force fighter jets carried out bombings in three different areas of Afghanistan. This military action resulted in the deaths of 36 people and left more than 150 individuals injured. India's stance remains firm that such actions undermine the security of the entire region.
