The results of the recently concluded assembly elections in five states have brought significant shifts in the dynamics of the INDIA alliance. Following the declaration of results, the relationship between the DMK and Congress in Tamil Nadu has deteriorated sharply. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, after losing power, Mamata Banerjee has changed her tone, advocating for a stronger alliance to counter the BJP. While the process of government formation is underway in states other than Assam and Puducherry, these election results have exposed deep fissures within the opposition unity.
The Tamil Nadu Verdict and the Collapse of Unity
The election results in Tamil Nadu have dealt a severe blow to the unity of the INDIA alliance. In the 234-seat assembly, actor Vijay's newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) surprised everyone by winning 108 seats. However, this fell short of a full majority, leading to a hung assembly, while even before the final results were out, TVK sought support from the Congress. Despite having contested the elections in alliance with the ruling DMK, the Congress, which won only 5 seats, decided to switch sides and support Vijay's party. This decision has left the DMK leadership deeply aggrieved.
DMK's 'Backstabbing' Charge and Congress's Rebuttal
' Responding to these allegations, Manickam Tagore, the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Virudhunagar, termed such language as unfortunate and unacceptable. Tagore argued that the Congress has always made sacrifices for its allies and stood by its ideology. He further stated that the mandate in Tamil Nadu was against the DMK's governance and that the Congress also suffered losses due to being an ally, while according to Tagore, the mandate is for change and for a government led by Vijay, and the DMK should accept its defeat.
West Bengal Defeat and Allegations of Electoral Theft
The results in West Bengal were equally unexpected, where the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, faced a crushing defeat. Mamata Banerjee herself lost her seat, while following the defeat, Rahul Gandhi came out in support of Mamata, alleging that the BJP 'stole' the elections in Assam and Bengal with the help of the Election Commission. Rahul Gandhi echoed Mamata's claim that more than 100 seats were stolen in Bengal. After losing power, Mamata Banerjee held a press conference where she repeatedly mentioned the INDIA alliance and noted that leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Uddhav Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, and Hemant Soren had called to express their solidarity.
Mamata Banerjee's New Role as a 'Common Citizen'
Mamata Banerjee has now vowed to strengthen the INDIA alliance from the position of a common citizen. She stated, "I no longer hold a chair, so I am now a common citizen. " It's pertinent to note that in West Bengal, the constituent parties of the INDIA alliance didn't contest together. The TMC, Congress, and Left parties fought independently, which directly benefited the BJP, allowing it to come to power in the state for the first time, while mamata's shift towards alliance unity comes only after the loss of state power.
The post-election scenario has presented a major challenge for the INDIA alliance to maintain its cohesion. While allies in Tamil Nadu are trading accusations, Mamata Banerjee is making the alliance her new priority after the loss in Bengal, while the internal friction and changing strategies of these opposition parties will determine the future course of national politics.
