External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar arrived in Ghana and held a high-level meeting with the Ghanaian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The primary objective of this visit was to further strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Ghana, building upon the foundation laid during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's previous visit to the country, while during the discussions, both leaders emphasized the need to take the existing comprehensive partnership to new heights and explore untapped areas of cooperation that could benefit both nations in the long term.

Signing of Key Agreements and Sectoral Cooperation

A significant highlight of the visit was the formal signing of two major agreements between India and Ghana. These agreements focus on the critical sectors of Agricultural Research and Training as well as Biodiversity. These pacts are expected to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, technology, and best practices between the two countries. Beyond these agreements, the ministers engaged in extensive deliberations regarding cooperation in several other vital sectors. These include pharmaceuticals and healthcare, mining, defense, railways, and the digital domain. The focus is on creating a strong framework where Indian expertise can support Ghana's development goals while fostering mutual economic growth.

Synergy Between National Initiatives

Dr. Jaishankar pointed out that India and Ghana, as developing nations, face very similar challenges in their journey toward progress. He highlighted the remarkable synergy between the national programs of both countries, while he specifically linked Ghana's initiatives such as the Accra Reset, Feed Ghana, and the ambitious goal of training 10 lakh coders with India's flagship programs. These include Ayushman Bharat for healthcare, initiatives for farmers' prosperity, the promotion of Millets, Digital India, and Startup India. By sharing experiences and successful models from these programs, both nations aim to accelerate their domestic development and address common socio-economic hurdles effectively.

Regional Leadership and Global South Advocacy

The External Affairs Minister underscored the pivotal role Ghana plays within the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). With Ghana set to assume the presidency of the African Union next year, India views its partnership with Ghana as a gateway to deeper engagement with the entire African continent. Dr. Jaishankar noted that India maintains long-standing and strong ties with both the AU and ECOWAS. Plus, he expressed appreciation for Ghana's efforts regarding reparatory justice and the return of cultural property, acknowledging the importance of these issues in the contemporary global discourse.

Collaborative Stance on UNSC Reforms and Multipolarity

A major portion of the dialogue was dedicated to global governance and the necessity of reforming international institutions. Both India and Ghana shared a common perspective on the urgent need for reforms within the United Nations, particularly the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Dr. Jaishankar emphasized that the voice of the Global South must be amplified in these forums to ensure a more equitable world order, while he remarked that the world is steadily moving toward multipolarity and natural diversity. In this evolving landscape, countries like India and Ghana must champion the cause of independence, strategic autonomy, and the right of nations to make their own decisions. This collaboration is seen as beneficial not just for the two countries, but for the stability and progress of the entire region and the world at large.
