The political atmosphere in the national capital has intensified as the opposition alliance, known as the INDIA block, prepares for a massive show of strength against the Election Commission of India (ECI). On Tuesday, October 6, prominent leaders and Members of Parliament from the opposition coalition are set to take to the streets of Delhi to voice their concerns regarding the functioning of the poll body and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. This protest, titled the 'Save Democracy March', signifies a unified front by the opposition against what they term as irregularities in the democratic process.

Key Leaders Joining the March

The march is expected to see the participation of several high-profile political figures. Among those leading the protest are Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while they will be joined by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee. The decision to organize this march was finalized during an INDIA alliance meeting held in Delhi on September 30, where the leaders collectively decided to challenge the Election Commission's recent administrative actions. Approximately 19 opposition parties are participating in this demonstration, covering a distance of about 3 km on foot from Parliament House to the ECI headquarters.

Demands and Allegations

The primary demand of the opposition is the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The INDIA block has accused the Election Commission of manipulating voter lists and has raised serious objections to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Protests have been ongoing since October 2, with various factions from the Left to the Congress participating in demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. The opposition claims that these measures are necessary to protect the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that every legitimate voter is included in the rolls.

Security and Logistics

In anticipation of the march, security arrangements in Delhi have been Notably bolstered. Heavy police deployment has been witnessed at Sansad Marg, the Election Commission office, and Jantar Mantar. Authorities have implemented multi-layered barricading to prevent any untoward incidents and to maintain law and order during the protest. The march is scheduled to begin at 11 AM, with MPs gathering at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament House at 10:30 AM. However, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the DMK have decided to stay away from this specific march, with AAP stating that it's fighting its own battles independently.

Future Roadmap of Protests

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh outlined a detailed schedule for future protests following the march, while he stated that after the peaceful march on October 6, the alliance will hold district-level marches and meetings until October 8. From October 10 to October 20, block-level meetings will be conducted to discuss the issue of alleged 'vote theft'.
