The Indian cricket team has finally managed to halt its disappointing run of form on the international stage. After facing a series of setbacks, including two T20 defeats against Ireland and four consecutive T20 losses against England, Team India has secured its first victory of the tour. In the opening One Day International (ODI) match held at the historic Edgbaston stadium, the Indian side displayed remarkable character to defeat the hosts, England. The victory was orchestrated by a brilliant captain's knock from Shubman Gill and an exceptional all-round display by Axar Patel, helping India chase down the target with 4 wickets to spare.

Breaking the Edgbaston Fortress After 12 Years

This win carries immense historical weight as England has maintained an extraordinary record at Birmingham's Edgbaston ground. The English side had not lost an ODI match at this venue for 12 years, creating a formidable reputation. The last time England tasted defeat in an ODI at Edgbaston was back in 2014, and interestingly, it was India who had defeated them on that occasion as well. Since then, England had secured seven consecutive ODI victories at this stadium, while however, in 2026, the Indian team once again proved to be the side to shatter England's dominance at this ground, ending their long-standing unbeaten streak.

England's Innings and the Middle Order Collapse

The match began with England winning the toss and electing to bat first, a decision made by captain Harry Brook that eventually backfired. The Indian bowlers took full advantage of the moisture present in the Edgbaston pitch during the early stages, while jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna started with great discipline, preventing the English openers from scoring freely. Although England attempted to accelerate after the first 7 overs, they struggled to maintain momentum. Ben Duckett played aggressively, but his partner Jacob Bethell found it difficult to settle. Bethell was eventually dismissed for 14 runs by Gurnoor Brar. Brar continued his impact by also removing the dangerous Ben Duckett, who scored 43 runs. Following these wickets, the England middle order collapsed completely. Captain Harry Brook was dismissed for just 1 run, Jos Buttler managed only 5, and Sam Curran failed to even open his account, departing for 0. At one stage, England was reeling at 107 for the loss of 6 wickets.

The Recovery and India's Successful Chase

Despite the collapse, Joe Root and Liam Dawson staged a magnificent recovery for the hosts. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 76 runs, while Liam Dawson contributed a vital 68. Their century partnership allowed England to cross the 250 mark, finishing with a total of 258 runs. In response, India's chase began on a shaky note as senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were dismissed early for 11 and 5 runs respectively. However, captain Shubman Gill showed immense grit, facing the likes of Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, and Sam Curran with confidence, while gill shared a crucial half-century partnership with Shreyas Iyer, scoring 80 runs off 75 balls before being forced to leave the field as retired hurt. Following Gill's departure, Shreyas Iyer was run out for 35, and KL Rahul could only contribute 1 run. The responsibility then fell on Washington Sundar and Axar Patel. Axar Patel played a blistering innings, reaching his half-century in just 38 balls. Washington Sundar provided perfect support, remaining unbeaten on 52 runs off 63 balls to guide India to a memorable victory.
