The monsoon season has unleashed a wave of destruction across several Indian states, with Kerala and Assam bearing the maximum brunt of torrential rains and subsequent flooding. The relentless downpour has severely disrupted normal life, leading to a rising death toll and significant damage to property and infrastructure. In Kerala, the death toll from rain-related incidents has reached 25, while 4 individuals remain missing. Simultaneously, the situation in Assam remains critical, with the number of fatalities rising to 87. Kerala Faces Extreme Rainfall and Red Alerts
Since August 1, Kerala has been battered by heavy rainfall that has created a grim situation in several districts. According to state government reports, 25 people have lost their lives in various rain-related accidents, while 4 people are missing and 10 others have sustained injuries. The physical destruction is immense, with 52 houses completely destroyed and 565 houses partially damaged across the state. Currently, more than 18,000 people are residing in over 400 relief camps established by the government. The districts of Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Alappuzha are among the worst affected, with many low-lying areas remaining submerged under water.

On top of that, new textbooks will be provided to students who lost theirs in the floods. The Chief Minister has assured immediate financial assistance to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. Plus, a sum of 25,000 rupees has been sanctioned for cleaning activities in each ward to prevent the spread of diseases.
The water levels of major rivers like Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha were recorded above the warning levels on Tuesday morning. Although the levels have started to recede gradually, the administration has advised residents living along the riverbanks to remain extremely vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of those in vulnerable zones as the weather remains unpredictable.
Assam Flood Situation and Casualties
In Northeast India, Assam continues to struggle with the aftermath of severe flooding. While there has been a slight improvement in the overall situation, the crisis is far from over. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that two more deaths occurred in the Sivasagar district within the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll in the state this year to 87.28 lakh people. Sivasagar is the most severely impacted district, with over 55,000 people affected, while Charaideo and Jorhat also face significant challenges as thousands of residents grapple with the rising waters.
Odisha Announces Massive Relief Package
64 lakh people affected across 22 districts. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an initial relief package of 110 crore rupees for the flood victims. The state government has initiated a comprehensive survey to assess the total damage caused by the floods. So far, 6 deaths have been reported in the state, and 3,567 houses have been damaged. The government has issued directives to ensure timely compensation for eligible families. 2 lakh rupees. Compensation for crop loss and livestock will also be provided in accordance with SDRF standards.
Weather Alerts for Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya
The IMD has extended its warnings to other parts of the Northeast, issuing Red and Orange alerts for 15 districts across Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. The weather department has cautioned that heavy rainfall in these states could further aggravate the flood situation in the bordering districts of Assam. Also, a Yellow alert has been issued for several parts of Nagaland, indicating that the region must remain prepared for heavy rain and potential landslides in the coming days.
