Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Pakistan once again, marking his third visit to the country within a span of 48 hours. Before reaching Islamabad on Tuesday, Araghchi also visited Russia and Oman. This diplomatic marathon is seen as a significant effort to de-escalate tensions with the United States and find a path toward peace. Araghchi's frequent visits to Pakistan indicate Iran's urgency in seeking a resolution and its strategy of engaging multiple nations to find a middle ground.
Diplomatic Efforts and the 'Red Line' Document
According to reports, during his previous visit to Pakistan, Araghchi submitted a 'Red Line' document outlining Iran's specific conditions for peace. The document reportedly includes proposals regarding the nuclear issue and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is attempting to use these negotiations to ensure regional stability while navigating international sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
High-Level Meeting with Vladimir Putin in Russia
Prior to his arrival in Pakistan, Araghchi held a crucial meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg. The meeting lasted approximately one and a half hours, covering bilateral relations, regional developments, and the ongoing conflicts involving the US and Israel. Araghchi described the meeting as highly productive, stating that all key issues were discussed openly. He emphasized the strong strategic partnership between Iran and Russia, noting Russia's support during recent conflicts. President Putin reaffirmed that Russia would support efforts to restore peace in West Asia and stand by Iran.
Trump Administration's Reaction to Iran's Proposal
Meanwhile, the White House has confirmed that it's reviewing a proposal submitted by Iran. The proposal suggests reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the current state of war. However, Iran has proposed that discussions regarding its nuclear program be deferred to a later stage. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Donald Trump has discussed this proposal with his National Security Team. According to a Reuters report, a US official indicated that Trump isn't entirely satisfied with the proposal because it lacks immediate commitments regarding Iran's nuclear program.
The Nuclear Stumbling Block in Negotiations
The primary obstacle to a potential deal remains the nuclear issue. Iran maintains that the war must end and disputes regarding ship movements in the Gulf region must be resolved before nuclear talks can commence. Conversely, the United States insists that the nuclear issue must be part of the negotiations from the very beginning. While Pakistan continues its efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two nations, the situation remains at a standstill with no major agreement reached yet.
Efforts from the Pakistani side are ongoing to move the dialogue forward, while however, due to the conflicting stances on the nuclear issue, the diplomatic process remains stalled at this juncture.
