Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, while the two leaders discussed the current regional situation in detail for approximately 45 minutes. This conversation occurred amidst expectations of a second round of peace talks between the United States and Iran. According to the Pakistan Prime Minister's Office, Shehbaz Sharif also shared details of his recent discussions with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey. The dialogue between the two leaders was described as positive and friendly.

US Delegation to Islamabad and Iran's Response

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated that a US delegation would arrive in Islamabad on Monday to conduct peace talks with Iran, while he announced via social media that his team is heading to Pakistan for the negotiations. However, Iran has not yet provided any official confirmation regarding its participation. Conversely, Iran's state news agency, IRNA, has labeled the reports regarding the second round of talks in Islamabad as false.

Iran's Conditions and Security Council Deliberations

The status of the second round of talks remains uncertain. According to reports, Iran has set a condition that it will only participate in the talks if the United States lifts the naval blockade on its ports. This stance has been echoed by Iran's ambassador to Pakistan and other sources, while iran's Supreme National Security Council has also held a meeting on this issue.

Ceasefire Deadline Set for April 22

Previously, direct talks between the US and Iran took place in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, but no agreement was reached. The new round of talks carries the hope of de-escalating tensions and extending the two-week ceasefire, which is scheduled to expire on Wednesday, April 22.

Pakistan's Role in Regional Peace

Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to Iran for participating in the first round of talks. He stated that Pakistan, along with its ally nations, would continue to make every effort to maintain peace and security in the region. The Iranian President appreciated Pakistan's efforts and remarked that the relationship between the two countries would strengthen further. During these discussions, the efforts of Pakistan's Army Chief, General Asim Munir, were also mentioned.
