The diplomatic relations between India and the United States have entered a period of significant tension following a series of maritime incidents near the coast of Oman, while external Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has engaged in a high-level dialogue with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressing India's profound objection to the loss of Indian lives during US military operations. This confrontation comes at a time when the United States is intensifying its enforcement of a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, targeting what it describes as the illegal transportation of Iranian oil.

US Stance on Hormuz Blockade

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has adopted a firm position regarding maritime security and the enforcement of sanctions. According to a statement released by US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, Rubio communicated clearly to Minister Jaishankar that the United States won't tolerate any violations of the blockade in the Hormuz region. The US administration has emphasized that the illegal smuggling of Iranian oil is a direct challenge to regional stability. Rubio further asserted that all commercial vessels operating in the area must immediately comply with the orders issued by the US military, while this compliance is deemed necessary by Washington to maintain peace and security within the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

India's Strong Diplomatic Protest

In response to the military actions that resulted in the deaths of Indian nationals, Minister S. Jaishankar lodged a formal and strong protest during his conversation with Secretary Rubio on Friday, while the Indian minister took to the social media platform X to reiterate India's stance, stating that such lethal actions against commercial vessels are entirely unjustifiable. Jaishankar emphasized that the safety of civilian seafarers must be prioritized and that the use of deadly force in these circumstances is a matter of grave concern for the Indian government, while he conveyed that India expects accountability for the actions that led to these tragic fatalities.

Details of the Maritime Incidents

The tension stems from three specific incidents involving vessels with Indian crew members near the Omani coast within a single week, while the first incident occurred on 8 June, involving the vessel Marivex. This ship was flying the flag of Palau and had 24 Indian sailors on board. It was disabled by US forces, though fortunately, all crew members were rescued safely. The second and most tragic incident took place on 10 June, involving another Palau-flagged tanker named Settebello. This vessel also carried 24 Indian crew members, but the US strike resulted in the deaths of 3 Indian sailors. The third incident involved the ship Jalveer, which was flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau. This vessel, carrying 20 Indian nationals, was attacked on Thursday.

Summoning of US Officials

Following these lethal strikes, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took the decisive step of summoning the Acting Chief of the US Embassy, Jason Meeks. During the meeting, Indian officials made it explicitly clear that US military attacks involving Indian sailors are unacceptable. The MEA summoned Meeks again on Friday to reinforce India's strong opposition. The ministry expressed serious concern over the use of lethal force by the US Navy against civilian commercial vessels, demanding a thorough explanation and accountability for the loss of life. This marks the first time India has publicly acknowledged and protested against US naval actions resulting in the deaths of its citizens in this region.
