In the world of business, it's often assumed that success is reserved for those with elite degrees or massive ancestral wealth. However, the story of Kiran Kumar, the founder and chairman of Lalithaa Jewellery, shatters these stereotypes. A man who had to drop out of school after the fifth grade and once struggled to find decent clothes to wear to a wedding, today stands as the head of a business empire valued at 11250 crore. His journey from the dusty streets of Nellore to becoming a titan of the South Indian jewellery industry is a testament to grit, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to the customer.
The Early Years of Struggle and Poverty
Kiran Kumar was born into a large and financially struggling family in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. He was the eighth child of his parents. His father worked as an accountant for various jewellers in the local bullion market, but his modest income was barely enough to sustain such a large household. The shadow of poverty was so deep that Kiran recalls a time when he had to borrow a T-shirt from a friend just to attend a relative's wedding because he had nothing suitable of his own. Due to the dire financial situation at home, he was forced to abandon his education after the fifth grade. At the tender age of 12, while other children were playing or studying, Kiran entered the jewellery market of Nellore to work and support his family.
The Foundation: A Mother's Sacrifice
While working in the market, Kiran developed a keen eye for business, while he noticed that jewellery manufactured in Nellore was being supplied to larger markets in Chennai and Hyderabad. He realized that if he could sell his products directly in these big cities, the profit margins would be Notably higher, while however, he lacked the capital to start his own venture. It was his mother who stepped in during this critical hour. She gave him her only four gold bangles, weighing approximately 48 grams, to start his business. Kiran took those bangles to a goldsmith, had them converted into six pairs of earrings, and set off for Chennai with hope in his heart.
The Chennai Connection and Wholesale Growth
Upon reaching Chennai's T Nagar, Kiran met M. S. Kandasamy Pillai, the then-owner of Lalitha Jewellery. It was late in the evening, and the shop was about to close, but Pillai was impressed by the quality of the earrings Kiran had brought. He gave Kiran his first order of 100 grams. This was the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship. The orders soon grew to 200 grams and beyond. Kiran spent years traveling between Nellore and Chennai on public buses, carrying his merchandise and building his reputation. His wholesale business eventually expanded globally, reaching markets in Canada, London, Singapore, and Dubai.
The 1999 Takeover: A Full Circle Moment
The most significant turning point in Kiran's life occurred on February 24, 1999. His mentor and first buyer, Kandasamy Pillai, had fallen into deep financial distress and was burdened by debt. To save the established brand from shutting down, Kiran took a bold step and bought the business. He cleared all the outstanding liabilities and rebranded the company as Lalithaa Jewellery, adding an extra 'a' to the name. This transition from a supplier to the owner of the very shop he once sold to marked the beginning of a new era.
Disrupting the Retail Market with Transparency
Moving from wholesale to retail brought new challenges. Kiran realized that retail customers were often confused by complex pricing, making charges, and wastage costs. He decided to disrupt the market with absolute transparency. He introduced a policy of low margins and high volume, encouraging customers to take photos of his jewellery and compare prices with other showrooms. His marketing campaigns were revolutionary, openly challenging customers to buy from him only if they found his prices to be the lowest. This honesty built immense trust, and Lalithaa Jewellery became a household name across South India.
Current Footprint and Financial Powerhouse
Today, Lalithaa Jewellery operates 61 showrooms across 51 cities in five southern states. This includes 23 stores in Andhra Pradesh, 20 in Tamil Nadu, 10 in Telangana, 7 in Karnataka, and 1 in Puducherry. The Upcoming IPO and Future Expansion

The IPO consists of a fresh issue of 1200 crore and an Offer for Sale (OFS) of 500 crore by the founder, Kiran Kumar Jain. The company plans to use 1033 crore 20 lakh from the fresh proceeds to open 10 new large-format stores across South India. According to a CRISIL report, Lalithaa Jewellery was the second fastest-growing regional jewellery company in terms of operating revenue growth between FY22 and FY24, cementing its position as a market leader.
