A major terrorist attack has struck Mali, resulting in the assassination of the country's Defense Minister, Sadio Camara. The coordinated offensive was carried out by the Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group JNIM in collaboration with Tuareg rebels, targeting multiple regions across the nation simultaneously. On Saturday, a suicide car bomb targeted the minister's residence in the city of Kati, located near the capital, Bamako.
Casualties and Impact of the Attack
The attack claimed the lives of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, his second wife, and two of his grandchildren. The intensity of the explosion was so powerful that it shook the outskirts of the capital city, Bamako, causing widespread panic among the local population. The targeted nature of the strike has highlighted the escalating security challenges in the region.
Escalation of Conflict in Multiple Regions
Rebels launched simultaneous attacks in various parts of the country. By Sunday, heavy shelling and intense fighting resumed in areas including Kati, Kidal, Gao, and Sevare. Tuareg rebels have officially claimed that Kidal is now entirely under their control. Under a negotiated agreement, the Malian army and their allied Russian forces were permitted to safely evacuate the military camps in the region.
Military Situation and Global Response
In November 2023, the Malian army, supported by the Russian Wagner Group, had successfully reclaimed Kidal from the rebels; however, the city has now fallen back into rebel hands. While the government maintains that the situation is under control, reports from the ground suggest a different reality. Access roads to military bases in Bamako have been closed, and residents near the airport remain terrified by the sounds of ongoing explosions.
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the European Union have strongly condemned these terrorist attacks and called for urgent international cooperation.
