Japan historically relies on the Middle East for more than 90% of its crude oil imports. Future Procurement and Regional Sourcing
Japan plans to increase imports from alternative routes in the Middle East that bypass the Strait of Hormuz, as well as expanding its reach into North America, Central and South America, and Central Asia, while procurement from the United States is specifically expected to quadruple year on year in May. This shift highlights Japan's broader strategy to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical instability in its traditional supply zones.
