The Government of Nepal has provided a significant update regarding the ongoing natural disaster that has gripped the nation, leading to a massive loss of life and property. In a recent statement, the government clarified that while there is no immediate large-scale threat perceived at this moment, it's absolutely essential to remain vigilant as a precautionary measure. The administration has emphasized that they're in full alert mode to tackle any emerging situation. This comes at a time when the country is reeling from a catastrophic event that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people and left thousands more injured across various regions.
Resumption of Rescue Operations in Trishuli
In the midst of this crisis, the Nepal government has announced that the rescue operation in the Trishuli region has been officially resumed. A high-ranking official from the Nepal Army provided critical information regarding the current environmental conditions, noting that the water level has already increased by 2 feet. The military and rescue teams are maintaining a constant vigil and are fully alert to any further changes in the water flow, while the situation remains sensitive, particularly in the coastal areas of the Nuwakot district, where there are renewed fears of flooding. Consequently, local residents in these vulnerable zones have been observed moving to safer locations to protect themselves from potential surges.
Government Directives and Identification Challenges
Sasmit Pokhrel, the government spokesperson and Education Minister, has issued a formal request on behalf of the government, urging everyone involved in relief and rescue work to move to secure areas if they sense any danger. The scale of the tragedy is reflected in the latest casualty figures. According to the information provided, 489 bodies have been recovered so far, and a significant number of people are still missing, with search operations continuing unabated. A major challenge currently facing the authorities is the identification of the deceased. Out of the recovered bodies, only 100 have been successfully identified, while 393 bodies remain unidentified, adding to the distress of families waiting for news of their loved ones.
Status of Indian Citizens
The disaster has also impacted foreign nationals, including those from India. According to the Ministry of External Affairs of India, 84 Indian citizens have been successfully rescued from the disaster-affected areas. However, there is ongoing concern for 290 other Indian nationals with whom contact has not yet been established. Efforts are being coordinated to locate and ensure the safety of these individuals as the rescue missions expand.
Glacier Burst and Overflow Risks
The threat landscape has been complicated by reports of a glacier burst in China, leading to water overflow. Addressing these concerns, spokesperson Sasmit Pokhrel stated that there is no immediate prospect of a major disaster from this specific event. The Nepal government has detailed that the glacier burst occurred near the confluence of the Chochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers in China, where a large pond had formed. While this has caused an overflow of water mixed with silt in several locations due to the natural breaking of the glacier, the government maintains that the current risk level isn't critical. Nevertheless, the administration insists that caution is the need of the hour.
The Threat of New Natural Dams
Despite the government's reassurances, the danger has not entirely passed, while a new cause for concern has emerged in the form of a newly created lake. This lake has been formed by the accumulation of ice, rocks, and debris brought down from the mountains during the recent disaster. As water continues to collect behind this natural barrier, reports of overflow have surfaced. There is a significant apprehension that if this natural dam were to break, it could trigger sudden and devastating flash floods in the downstream areas. This potential for a secondary disaster keeps the rescue teams and the local population on edge as they monitor the stability of these mountain formations.
