The disaster, which has claimed at least 162 lives and left over 750 people missing, has been directly linked by Nepalese authorities to a glacial lake outburst in Chinese territory. This event has reignited fears in India regarding China's ambitious Medog Hydropower Project, often described by experts and politicians as a potential water bomb situated right at India's doorstep.

The Nepal Catastrophe and the China Connection

The scale of destruction in Nepal is immense, with homes, roads, and vital electricity projects being swept away by the raging waters, while among the 750 missing individuals, reports indicate that 133 are Indian nationals. In total, more than 1000 people are feared to have been carried away by the deluge originating from the Tibetan mountains. Nepal has officially pointed the finger at China for this tragedy. According to Nepalese officials, a lake in the Kerung region of China burst on Wednesday, releasing a staggering 2 crore cubic meters of water into Nepal. The primary grievance is the lack of communication; Nepal claims that if China had provided a timely alert when the water levels first surged in their territory, many lives could have been saved through early evacuations and precautionary measures.

The Bhote Koshi River and the Path of Destruction

The flash floods primarily affected the Rasuwa district, specifically the Bhote Koshi river. This river originates from the Shishapangma mountain in Tibet before entering Nepal and flowing through districts like Sindhupalchok and Rasuwa. The sudden influx of water from the Kerung lake burst transformed this river into a destructive force, highlighting the vulnerability of downstream nations to environmental events occurring across the border in China. This incident has served as a grim preview of what could happen on a much larger scale if the massive dams being planned by Beijing were to fail or be managed without transparency.

The Medog Project: A Giant Near the Border

The disaster in Nepal has turned all eyes toward the Medog Hydropower Project, which China is constructing just 30 kilometers from the Arunachal Pradesh border in India. This project is set to be the world's largest hydroelectric plant, located at the Great Bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo river, while at this point, the river takes a sharp turn before entering India as the Siang and eventually becoming the Brahmaputra in Assam. The project, which received formal approval from Beijing eight months ago, saw construction begin in Nyingchi in July 2025. The plan involves building five dams along a 250 kilometer stretch of the canyon, where water will drop from a height of approximately 2000 meters to generate power.

Technical Scale and Geological Risks

The Medog project is staggering in its proportions. It's expected to be completed around 2033 with a massive capacity of 60 gigawatts. It's estimated to produce nearly 300 billion units of electricity annually, which is almost three times the capacity of the famous Three Gorges Dam. The cost of this project is estimated to be between 137 and 170 billion dollars. However, it isn't the size but the location that terrifies geologists. Medog is situated near a major fault zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, making it one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Even if the dam is built to withstand a major earthquake, the surrounding mountains could suffer from massive landslides, rockfalls, and mudflows that could block the river or cause catastrophic downstream flooding.

Historical Precedents and the Water Bomb Label

India's concerns are rooted in past experiences. In the year 2000, a dam breach in Tibet caused sudden flooding in parts of Northeast India. More recently, in 2017, the Siang river in Arunachal Pradesh suddenly turned black, which was later attributed to upstream mining activities in Tibet. These incidents underscore the lack of real-time data sharing from the Chinese side. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has explicitly termed the Medog project a water bomb. The fear is that China could use the dam to either restrict water flow during dry seasons or release massive amounts of water suddenly during the monsoon, potentially using water as a strategic weapon or causing accidental disasters.

India's Counter-Measures and Local Challenges

In response to the threat, the Indian central government is working on the 11,000 megawatt Siang Upper Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh. The primary objective of this project is to regulate water flow and act as a buffer against sudden surges from the Chinese side. However, this project faces internal opposition from the local Adi tribal community in the Upper Siang district. While India attempts to secure its borders against hydrological threats, the internal debate over environmental and social impacts continues. Meanwhile, the immediate aftermath of the Nepal floods has put Indian states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on high alert. In Bihar, monitoring has been increased in six districts, including West Chantharan, while in UP, the administrations of Maharajganj and Kushinagar are on standby. All 36 gates of the Gandak Barrage have been opened to manage the rising water levels, and NDRF teams have been deployed as India sends relief materials to Nepal.
