This map includes the territories of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani, depicting them as part of Nepal. Official Confirmation from Nepal Rastra Bank
The spokesperson for the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Guru Prasad Paudel, provided details regarding this development on Saturday. He stated that the central bank is in the process of issuing the new one-rupee coin, while while the bank has not yet officially received the final approved design of the coin from the government, there is a firm belief within the institution that the map featuring the disputed territories will be the central element of the design. This move signifies the government's intent to formalize its territorial claims through its national currency and daily transactions of its citizens.
Historical Context of the Border Dispute
The border controversy between India and Nepal gained significant momentum in May 2020. At that time, the government led by the then Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli released a new official political map of Nepal. This map included Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani within Nepal's borders for the first time in such a formal capacity. India had immediately rejected this map, calling it a unilateral act that wasn't based on historical facts or evidence. India has consistently maintained that the resolution of such sensitive border issues should be achieved through bilateral dialogue and diplomatic channels rather than through unilateral cartographic changes.
Policy Reversal and Public Pressure
Interestingly, the path to this decision wasn't straightforward and involved a recent policy flip-flop. On July 20, the Nepal government had initially decided to make a change to the design of the one-rupee coin. The plan was to remove the map of Nepal from the coin and replace it with an image of a Buddhist monastery. However, this proposal met with intense opposition from various political parties and the general public in Nepal. Critics argued that removing the map would be seen as a sign of weakness or a retreat from the country's territorial claims. Following the mounting pressure and protests, the government was forced to reverse its decision and reinstate the map on the upcoming coin.
Physical Characteristics of the New Coin
According to the Nepal Rastra Bank, the new one-rupee coin won't only differ in its design but also in its physical attributes. The bank has indicated that the new coin will be smaller in size and lighter in weight compared to the one-rupee coins currently in circulation. On top of that, the metal composition used for the coin will also be different.
