Netanyahu accused the Mayor of endangering the lives of Jewish residents in New York by spreading what he termed as lies regarding Israel's military operations in Gaza. The Prime Minister's remarks highlight a deepening rift between the Israeli leadership and the leadership of one of the world's most prominent cities, which is home to a significant Jewish population.
Accusations of Spreading Falsehoods
During his speech on Thursday at the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Netanyahu alleged that Mayor Mamdani has been actively disseminating misinformation about the conflict in Gaza. He claimed that these actions have direct consequences for the safety of Jews living in New York. Netanyahu specifically labeled Mamdani as an anti-Semitic mayor, dedicating a portion of his high-profile UN address to criticize the man who had previously threatened to have him arrested upon his arrival in the city.
Concerns Over Jewish Safety in New York
Netanyahu stated that since Mamdani was elected as the Mayor of the city, many Jewish people no longer feel safe in New York. He mentioned that individuals have spoken to him, expressing that the city is no longer the one they once knew and that it has changed very rapidly. This statement underscores the Prime Minister's view that the political climate under the current Mayor has become hostile toward the Jewish community.
Ongoing Conflict and Criticism of Military Action
This development is the latest in an ongoing debate between Netanyahu and New York City's first Muslim mayor, while the Mayor has long been a vocal critic of Israel's military actions in Gaza. Mamdani has previously referred to Netanyahu as a war criminal and the architect of a terrible genocide against the Palestinian people. However, Mamdani maintains that criticizing Israel and advocating for Palestinian rights doesn't constitute anti-Semitism.
Meeting with Donald Trump and Support for Israel
S. President Donald Trump in New York this week, while during his UN speech on Thursday, Netanyahu praised the President for his support of Israel, stating that there has been no better partner than President Trump. In response to the Prime Minister's speech, Mamdani issued a statement reiterating his criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza. He noted that the harsh war initiated by Netanyahu in response to the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of more than 73000 people so far.
Allegations of Crimes Against Humanity
In his statement, Mamdani said that as he has done repeatedly, Prime Minister Netanyahu used his speech to repeat baseless lies to justify the genocide committed against Palestinians. He further added that no amount of lies can change the truth that Netanyahu still faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC), which accuses him of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The Issue of the Arrest Warrant
During his campaign for the mayoralty last year, Mamdani had stated that he would direct the New York Police to act on the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu, while however, he recently acknowledged that the city doesn't have the authority to take him into custody. Since then, the Mayor has called on the federal government to arrest Netanyahu, although Trump has stated that the Prime Minister won't be arrested. Netanyahu concluded this portion of his speech by addressing Mamdani directly, saying that the Mayor tried to stop him from coming and tried to suppress his voice, but asserted that his voice and the truth can't be suppressed.
