In a significant political development in Kerala, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid at the residence of former Chief Minister and current Leader of the Opposition, Pinarayi Vijayan. This move by the central agency has sparked intense political turmoil and physical confrontations. Following the raid, supporters of the former Chief Minister gathered in large numbers and reportedly attacked the ED officials involved in the operation, while this incident has further escalated the tension between the state's political factions and the central investigative agencies.
Pinarayi Vijayan's First Reaction
Breaking his silence after the raid, Pinarayi Vijayan termed the entire exercise a political conspiracy. He stated that the ED had been wanting to search his house for a long time. In a sharp jab at the Congress leadership, Vijayan remarked that this raid would bring immense satisfaction to certain individuals, specifically mentioning Rahul Gandhi. He suggested that Gandhi would be very happy with this development, as it aligns with the questions the Congress leader had previously raised regarding the lack of action against him.
Vijayan pointed out that Rahul Gandhi had openly questioned why the ED wasn't raiding Pinarayi Vijayan's house or why he wasn't being arrested. According to the former Chief Minister, the BJP government at the center has been consistently and deliberately targeting opposition leaders across the country. He noted that while there have been massive protests nationwide against such actions, the Congress party's stance appears contradictory. He alleged that the Congress seems to want the ED's interference to continue against other political parties, even as they complain about it when it affects their own members.
A Message of Resilience
Addressing his supporters and the media, Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized that such investigative actions wouldn't mark the end of his political journey or his party's influence. "None of these things will be able to finish us. We see this only as a beginning," he asserted. He warned his political opponents not to think that such steps could wipe them out. He credited the local people and his party colleagues for their emotional support during the raid, while he stated that whenever enemies have prepared to attack him, he has received unwavering support from the party, and today's events proved that this support remains as strong as ever. He identified this collective strength as his primary asset.
Details of the CMRL Money Laundering Case
The ED's action is linked to a money laundering investigation involving a Kerala-based company, Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL). The raids weren't limited to the former Chief Minister's residence but also extended to several locations associated with his daughter, Veena Vijayan, and various company officials. The roots of this case go back to 2019, when the Income Tax Department first raided CMRL.
During the initial investigation, authorities discovered evidence of 130 crore rupees in fictitious expenses. Following these findings, the case was handed over to the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO). The SFIO's subsequent probe made even more startling claims, alleging that the company had recorded 182 crore rupees in fake cash expenses over the past 15 years. 63 crore rupees in the form of salaries and other payments between the financial years 2015-16 and 2022-23. Despite these substantial internal payments, the company reportedly failed to provide any dividends to its shareholders, raising further suspicions about its financial practices.
