Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has launched a sharp attack on Union Minister Lalan Singh following his controversial statement that welfare scheme benefits will now be distributed based on voter cards instead of Aadhaar cards. During a Panchayati Raj program, Union Minister Lalan Singh had stated that beneficiaries would now need to provide their voter cards to avail of government schemes, marking a major policy shift. This statement has created a political storm across the country, prompting the opposition to aggressively target the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rahul Gandhi has termed this entire development as a deep-rooted conspiracy designed to strip citizens of their fundamental rights and legitimate entitlements.
Taking to social media, Rahul Gandhi elaborated on the issue and attempted to break down the layers of what he describes as a sinister plot orchestrated by the administration, while he began his post by stating that a minister of the Modi government has officially announced that the benefits of welfare schemes will no longer be determined by Aadhaar, but by the voter ID card. According to the Leader of the Opposition, this isn't a mere administrative modification, but a very deep conspiracy that citizens need to understand carefully and patiently. Rahul Gandhi alleged that under the guise of Special Information Revision or SIR, crores of names are being systematically purged from voter lists across the nation, warning that if this practice isn't halted immediately, even more names will be arbitrarily deleted.
Continuing his scathing critique, Rahul Gandhi raised questions about whose names are being removed from the electoral rolls on a priority basis. He answered his own question by stating that the majority of those whose names are being deleted are citizens who harbor deep resentment against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, while the Leader of the Opposition argued that the voter list should ideally remain under the independent purview and administration of an impartial Election Commission, but it has now been placed in the hands of a Modi government employee named Gyanesh Kumar. Rahul Gandhi alleged that this bureaucratic machinery is operating in collusion with the BJP, pointing out that the opposition has previously caught instances of vote theft with concrete evidence.
Rahul Gandhi expressed grave apprehension that preparations are underway to engineer voter lists in such a manner that the BJP maintains a permanent majority. He cautioned that this very list will now determine whether an ordinary citizen receives financial assistance from government welfare schemes or not. He warned in a stern tone that tomorrow, if any citizen decides to oppose the BJP, their name will be selectively and systematically targeted for deletion from the electoral rolls. Describing the cascading effect of this action, he noted that the moment a name is deleted, the vote is lost, and once the vote is lost, all legitimate rights and entitlements disappear along with it.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the Leader of the Opposition stated that before one realizes it, citizens will be reduced to invisible inhabitants of a hijacked democracy where the public no longer chooses the government, but the government chooses its own compliant public. Today, this is being applied to Panchayati Raj schemes, but tomorrow it could extend to essential provisions like rations, pensions, MGNREGA, housing, scholarships, and even reservations. According to Rahul Gandhi, this isn't traditional politics aimed at winning elections through democratic means, but rather a meticulously planned arrangement to steal elections and establish a permanent setup to cling to power indefinitely.
Concluding his detailed critique, Rahul Gandhi asserted that casting a vote is an absolute constitutional right and not a conditional privilege. He emphasized that the pension of a poor citizen can't be held hostage or made subservient to their voter card. In his view, this transcends ordinary vote theft; it's the outright theft of citizens fundamental rights, and he vowed that the opposition won't allow this injustice to take place under any circumstances.
On the other hand, Union Minister Lalan Singh had made the initial remark during a Panchayati Raj department event, stating that beneficiaries would henceforth receive welfare benefits strictly through the EPIC number on their voter cards. He explicitly stated that the prevailing system dependent on Aadhaar cards is coming to an end and will soon be completely dismantled. Lalan Singh's controversial statement surfaced at a politically sensitive juncture when the opposition has already been cornering the government over the ongoing SIR controversy. Notably, no official response or clarification has been issued by the central government thus far regarding Lalan Singh's remarks, further intensifying the political friction surrounding the matter.
