The timing of this bonus is strategically aligned with the upcoming Durga Puja and Dussehra holidays, ensuring that employees have additional financial resources to celebrate with their families.
Financial Outlay and Beneficiary Details
61 crore rupees. This substantial amount will be distributed among 11,40,770 eligible railway employees. The Productivity Linked Bonus is a long-standing tradition in the Indian Railways, aimed at motivating the staff to maintain high standards of efficiency and service. By approving this 78-day bonus, the government has maintained its commitment to the welfare of the railway workforce, which serves as the backbone of the nation's transportation infrastructure.
Eligible Categories and Individual Payouts
The bonus will be paid to various categories of non-gazetted staff who are essential to the daily operations of the railways. According to the government's announcement, each eligible employee will receive a maximum payment of 17,951 rupees for the 78-day period.
Record-Breaking Performance Metrics
The decision to grant this bonus is backed by the exceptional performance of the Indian Railways during the 2025-26 period. The railway network achieved significant milestones, including the loading of a record 1670 million tonnes of cargo. 41 billion passengers. These figures represent a strong operational efficiency that the government seeks to reward through the PLB mechanism.
Calculation Logic and Union Demands
Currently, the PLB calculation is based on a monthly salary ceiling of 7,000 rupees. When calculated for a 78-day period, this results in a maximum bonus of 17,951 rupees for non-gazetted employees. However, this calculation has been a point of discussion among railway associations, while the Indian Railways Technical Supervisors Association (IRTSA) has raised demands for a revision of these figures. The association has requested that the salary ceiling for Level-2 and above employees be increased to 18,000 rupees, along with the inclusion of Dearness Allowance (DA), to better reflect their higher pay scales. The IRTSA argues that the current 7,000 rupee limit is outdated, especially considering that the minimum wage for unskilled workers stands at 21,000 rupees. Based on an 18,000 rupee ceiling, the association has recommended that the annual bonus should be increased to at least 46,184 rupees.
