In a landmark development for the water security of North India, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was officially signed between the states of Rajasthan and Haryana regarding the long-pending Yamuna Water Project. This historic agreement, which had been stalled for approximately 32 years, has finally entered a decisive phase. The signing ceremony took place in New Delhi in the presence of high-ranking officials and political leaders, marking a significant step toward resolving the water crisis in the arid regions of Rajasthan and ensuring equitable water distribution.

A Milestone in Water Cooperation

The project, estimated to cost approximately 34,102 crore rupees, is being hailed as a milestone in the water history of Rajasthan. Vision of Water Security

During the event, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed his deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while he stated that water security is among the highest priorities in the Prime Minister's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India). Under the Prime Minister's leadership, a new work culture of water conservation, water management, and interstate cooperation has been developed across the country, while the Chief Minister noted that like the Narmada Project, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ken-Betwa Link Project, and Ram Jal Setu Link, the Yamuna Water Project is a result of this visionary thinking.

Technical Specifications and Infrastructure

The project involves an extensive engineering plan to transport water from Haryana to Rajasthan. 5 kilometer long underground pipeline will be laid from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana to the Hansiyawas reservoir in the Churu district of Rajasthan. This pipeline will facilitate the transfer of 577 MCS of Yamuna water to Rajasthan. 6 meters each. Also, the project will feature an inspection road, artificial reservoirs, and a modern water management system to ensure efficiency and prevent wastage, while the project is designed to be mutually beneficial, as it also includes provisions to provide drinking water at 10 locations within Haryana.

Implementation and Future Impact

The Rajasthan government has already prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and uploaded it to the E-PAMS portal of the Central Water Commission. Haryana has given its theoretical approval for the pipeline alignment, while to oversee the construction and operation of this massive undertaking, a special purpose vehicle named the Rajasthan Haryana Yamuna Water Project-SPV (RHYW-SPV) will be formed. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressed confidence that this historic initiative will ensure water security for future generations in Rajasthan. It's expected to provide a new impetus to the social, economic, and industrial development of water-stressed regions, particularly the Shekhawati area, by providing a reliable source of water for various needs.
