The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is scheduled to submit its interim report regarding the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya to the Supreme Court on Monday. This development follows the court's directives to provide a status update on the ongoing investigation into financial irregularities within the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, while while the interim report is ready for judicial review, the SIT has formally requested additional time from the state government to conclude its final report, citing the complexity of the financial audit and the need for a comprehensive probe into the matter.

Formation and Progress of the SIT Investigation

The investigation was initiated following serious allegations of donation theft that surfaced last month. In response, the Uttar Pradesh government, acting on the recommendation of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, constituted a 3 member SIT on June 13. Initially, the team was granted a 15 day window to complete its findings. However, as the scope of the investigation widened and more evidence came to light, the government extended the SIT's tenure by another 15 days on July 1 to ensure all aspects of the financial discrepancies were thoroughly examined. The team has been working diligently to trace the flow of funds and identify the loopholes in the existing donation management system.

Impact of the Initial 9 Page Report

Earlier, on June 23, the SIT had submitted a preliminary 9 page report to the state government. This initial document was instrumental in triggering a series of significant actions. Based on the findings of that report, several FIRs were registered, and the main accused individuals were arrested. On top of that, the investigation led to the resignations of several senior officials within the temple trust, highlighting the gravity of the situation. The upcoming interim report to the Supreme Court is expected to build upon these initial findings and provide a clearer picture of the total financial impact and the individuals involved in the malpractice.

Supreme Court Intervention and Legal Proceedings

The alleged donation theft case has also drawn the attention of the highest court in the country. On July 13, the Supreme Court heard petitions seeking an impartial and time bound investigation into the matter. During the hearing, the court issued a notice to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust and directed the SIT to present a status report on the investigation. The submission of the interim report on Monday is a direct response to this judicial order. Depending on the court's observations and any further instructions, the SIT will proceed with the next phase of its investigation.

Political Reactions and Future Administrative Changes

Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya has expressed the state government's commitment to a fair probe. He stated that the government is also waiting for the SIT's final report and assured that those found guilty would face strict consequences. Maurya remarked that anyone involved in the theft of donations would have to face the mace of Hanuman ji, emphasizing that no one would be spared. Meanwhile, sources suggest that the final report's conclusions could lead to extensive changes in the administration of the Ram Mandir and the system used for counting and managing offerings. The next meeting of the Trust is scheduled for July 22 in Ayodhya, where these issues are likely to be discussed in detail.
