Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL), the fast-moving consumer goods arm of Reliance Industries, has officially announced its entry into the highly competitive ice cream market with the launch of its new brand, Bombay Creamery. This strategic move by Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance is set to redefine the market dynamics, much like the company did in the telecommunications sector with Jio, while by offering a wide range of ice cream products including cups, cones, and sticks at a starting price of just 10 rupees, Reliance is directly challenging the dominance of established players in the industry.
Aggressive Pricing and Market Disruption
The most striking feature of the Bombay Creamery launch is its aggressive pricing strategy. While established brands like Amul offer products such as Mango Flavor Sticks and Kashmiri Kesar Kulfi on quick commerce platforms like Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, and Blinkit for a minimum of 20 rupees, Reliance has entered the market at exactly half that price. This 10 rupee entry point is designed to make high-quality ice cream accessible to every Indian household, fitting perfectly into the budget of the common man. Currently, the brand is being rolled out across Western India, with plans for a rapid nationwide expansion in the near future.
Impact on Competitors and Stock Market
The announcement of Reliance's entry into the ice cream segment sent ripples through the stock market. On Wednesday, shares of Kwality Walls witnessed a significant decline, falling by 3 percent to reach 43 rupees on the BSE. This marked the seventh consecutive trading session of decline for the stock, leading to a total cumulative loss of 11 percent. The market's reaction underscores the perceived threat that Reliance's distribution muscle and pricing power pose to existing dairy and ice cream giants. Industry experts suggest that the entry-level price war could force other companies to rethink their pricing and promotional strategies to retain their market share.
Quality Assurance and Product Range
Despite the low price point, Reliance has emphasized that there will be no compromise on quality. T. Krishnakumar, the Director of RCPL, stated that Bombay Creamery products are made from real dairy cream, ensuring a premium taste experience. The brand is launching with a diverse portfolio of flavors to cater to evolving consumer preferences. In addition to classic favorites like Vanilla and Chocolate, the range includes trending flavors such as Salted Caramel, Matcha, and Tiramisu. The company is also leveraging the growing demand for fast delivery through quick commerce apps, which have Notably boosted ice cream consumption in urban areas.
The Campa Cola Blueprint
This isn't the first time Reliance has utilized aggressive pricing to capture market share in the FMCG sector. The company previously employed a similar strategy with the re-launch of the Campa brand, offering 200ml bottles for just 10 rupees. That move triggered a massive price war in the soft drink industry and forced global giants to adjust their tactics. The success of the Campa strategy is evident, with the brand's gross sales projected to cross 4700 crore rupees in the 2026 financial year. Reliance is now looking to replicate this success in the ice cream category, using its vast distribution network and retail presence to ensure high visibility.
Future Outlook and Market Growth
The Indian ice cream market is currently experiencing a strong growth phase, driven by rising temperatures, prolonged heatwaves, and increasing disposable income among consumers. According to data from Expert Market Research, the market is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 percent. 10 billion dollars by the year 2035. Reliance is positioning itself to capture a significant portion of this growth, particularly in smaller towns where brand penetration is still evolving. Deven Choksi, Managing Director of DR Choksi Finserv, noted that this is part of Reliance's long-term game plan. By installing dedicated freezers in retail stores and leveraging its supply chain, Reliance aims to make Bombay Creamery a household name, posing a formidable challenge to legacy brands.
