A wave of mourning and terror has gripped the Banda assembly constituency in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh following a devastating hooch tragedy. According to the latest reports, the consumption of poisonous liquor has claimed the lives of 11 people across various villages in the region. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local administration and the police department, prompting immediate and rigorous action, while in addition to the fatalities, 4 individuals are reported to be in critical condition, while a total of 25 people have been admitted to various medical facilities for urgent treatment. The victims were initially taken to the Civil Hospital in Banda, but due to their deteriorating health, they were subsequently referred to the district hospital in Sagar for specialized care.
Affected Villages and Administrative Response
The tragedy has cast a dark shadow over several villages under the Banda tehsil. The residents affected by the poisonous liquor belong to villages including Patan, Nauraj, Dilauna, Bamura, Hinauti, and Gugrakhurd, among others, while as soon as the news of the mass casualties broke, senior officials and political representatives rushed to the hospital to monitor the situation. Among those who visited the victims and their families were the regional MLA Virendra Singh Lambardar, District Collector Pratibha Pal, Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujania, CMHO Dr. Devesh Patairiya, and former MLA Tarvar Singh Lodhi. The officials expressed their deep condolences to the bereaved families and held discussions with the medical staff to ensure that the injured receive the best possible treatment.
Crackdown on Liquor Outlets and Sampling

As a precautionary measure, several liquor shops have been sealed to prevent further casualties. The shops that have been shut down are located in Barethi, Banda, Shahgarh, Magardha, Vinayaka, Dalpatpur, and Baraytha. The authorities are currently conducting extensive sampling of the liquor stocks found at these locations to determine the source of the toxicity. The Excise Department's role has come under heavy scrutiny as the investigation progresses, with many questioning how such a large-scale distribution of poisonous liquor was possible.
Negligence of the Excise Department
The tragedy has highlighted significant lapses within the Excise Department. Reports indicate that a licensed liquor contractor in the city had recently filed a formal complaint regarding the rampant sale of counterfeit liquor under the brand name Bombay Whisky. Despite this specific warning, it's alleged that the Excise Department failed to take the necessary preventive measures. On top of that, just 4 days prior to this incident, the department had held a meeting where licensed contractors expressed their strong resentment over the large-scale illegal liquor trade and the sale of fake alcohol in the area. The contractors had warned the officials about the potential dangers, but their concerns were reportedly ignored by the responsible authorities. The current tragedy is being seen as a direct consequence of this administrative apathy.
Political Fallout and Demands for Justice
The incident has also sparked a political row in Madhya Pradesh. Jitu Patwari, the President of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, has launched a scathing attack on the state government. He alleged that the state has been taken over by the liquor mafia and expressed his deep sorrow over the recurring nature of such tragedies in Sagar, while patwari mentioned that he had visited the region during previous incidents and witnessed the plight of families suffering due to addiction and illegal trade. He demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter and insisted that the members of the liquor mafia responsible for these 11 deaths should be behind bars within 24 hours. While the administration awaits the final investigation report to clarify the exact cause of death and the sequence of events, the atmosphere in Banda remains one of grief and anxiety.
