Political Leaders Condemn the Demolition
The Samajwadi Party and the Congress have come out strongly against the administration's decision. Former Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took to public platforms to express his views on the matter. He remarked that the primary responsibility and the greatest achievement of any government should be the maintenance of social harmony. His statement is being interpreted as a critique of the government's approach, suggesting that such actions could disturb the peace and unity of the region, which is essential for the state's progress.
Imran Masood Alleges Constitutional Violation
Congress Member of Parliament Imran Masood has launched a scathing attack on the state government and the local administration regarding the bulldozer action. He termed the day of the demolition as a black day for the people of Saharanpur. Masood alleged that the action was a direct blow to the Constitution of India. According to him, the mosque wasn't a recent construction but dated back to before 1911, making it a historical structure. He claimed that there were still 22 days remaining in a specific legal timeframe, yet the administration chose to act prematurely under the cover of night.
Masood stated, "The Constitution is being blown to pieces. This mosque has existed since before 1911. There were 22 days left. The area was surrounded from all sides overnight, while a hammer is being swung at the country's Constitution. Don't think that by martyring the mosque, a great deed has been accomplished. Today this is being done to us, tomorrow it will be done to someone else; no Hindu will be happy with this.
Claims Regarding Ownership and Legal Procedures
The Congress MP further detailed the legal standing of the property, asserting that the ownership of the mosque is still officially recorded in the names of Wahid Khan and Yaqub Khan, while he raised serious questions about the judicial process, claiming that the High Court's proceedings overlooked vital facts. He specifically pointed out that the Waqf Board was neither made a party to the legal case nor was it involved in any of the proceedings leading up to the demolition. Masood described the execution of the demolition as an act of suppression, stating that the entire area was cordoned off and residents were forced to stay inside their homes while the structure was razed. He has called upon the citizens of Saharanpur to wear black bands as a mark of protest against what he calls an unjust action.
Administrative Justification and Security Deployment
The demolition operation was conducted under the direct supervision of the SDM, the City Magistrate, and a significant contingent of the police force. The basis for the action was an order from the City Magistrate's court, which had declared the mosque illegal during a hearing last month, while the court had subsequently ordered its removal from the Collectorate premises to clear the illegal encroachment.
In anticipation of potential unrest or protests, the Saharanpur district administration has declared a state of high alert. To maintain law and order, specialized units such as the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and the Rapid Response Force (RRF) have been stationed at various sensitive points throughout the city. Firefighting vehicles have also been positioned strategically at different locations to respond to any emergencies.
