The sacred festival of Shardiya Navratri is set to begin on the Pratipada Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwin. In the year 2026, this auspicious nine-day celebration will commence on Sunday, October 11. The first day of Navratri is marked by the traditional ritual of Ghatasthapana or Kalash Sthapana, where devotees invite Goddess Durga into their homes. According to Vedic scriptures, performing the Kalash installation at the correct time is essential to receive the full spiritual benefits of the prayers. For those planning to welcome the Goddess, there are two primary auspicious windows available during the day to ensure peace and prosperity in the household.
The Most Auspicious Morning Muhurat
The early morning hours immediately following sunrise are considered the most divine for Kalash Sthapana. During this time, the atmosphere is filled with purity and tranquility, making it ideal for invoking the divine energy of Maa Durga. On October 11, 2026, the most recommended window for Ghatasthapana is between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM. Devotees are advised to complete their preparations and establish the Kalash within this timeframe to attract positive energy and ensure a successful start to the nine-day festival. Starting the rituals during this period is believed to bring immense happiness and growth to the family.
Abhijit Muhurat and Important Precautions
If for any reason one is unable to perform the ritual during the morning hours, there is a second highly auspicious window known as the Abhijit Muhurat. This period is considered universally beneficial and effective for all sacred activities. The Abhijit Muhurat on the first day of Navratri will typically fall between 11:45 AM and 12:30 PM. Performing the installation during this time is also considered very fruitful. However, it's crucial to avoid the Rahukaal period, as scriptures strictly prohibit starting any auspicious work during that time. Always ensure that the Ghatasthapana is conducted during a Shubh Choghadiya or the Abhijit Muhurat to avoid any negative influences.
Complete Step-by-Step Procedure for Kalash Sthapana
The process of Kalash Sthapana involves several meticulous steps to ensure the sanctity of the ritual. First, one must clean the designated prayer area, preferably in the Ishan Kon (North-East direction) of the house. The area should be purified by sprinkling Ganga Jal. Next, a wooden platform or a clean patch of soil should be prepared. Spread clean soil or place a red cloth on a wooden stool and sow barley (Saptadhanya) seeds on it.
For the Kalash itself, use a vessel made of copper, brass, or clay. Draw a Swastika symbol on the Kalash and tie a sacred thread (Kalawa) around its neck. Fill the vessel with pure water and a bit of Ganga Jal. Inside the Kalash, place Durva grass, Akshat (unbroken rice), a betel nut, and a coin, while these items symbolize various forms of prosperity and divine blessings.
Once the vessel is ready, place 5 or 7 mango or Ashoka leaves around the mouth of the Kalash so that their tips point outwards. Take a dry coconut, wrap it in a red cloth or Chunari, and secure it with Kalawa. Place this coconut on top of the leaves in the center of the Kalash, ensuring the face of the coconut is directed towards the devotee. Finally, place the Kalash in the center of the prepared soil or barley bed, while with flowers and rice in hand, invoke Goddess Durga and all other deities, and light the Akhand Jyoti (eternal lamp) to begin the nine-day worship.
