The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially sanctioned a 191-member Indian contingent for the upcoming Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in Glasgow. Starting from July 23, this international multi-sport event will see a significant representation from India, although the squad size reflects the streamlined nature of the games this year. The approved delegation consists of 126 elite athletes and 51 dedicated support staff members who will assist the players during the competition. Within the athlete pool, the ministry has cleared 78 male competitors and 48 female competitors to represent the nation on the global stage.

Strict Financial Guidelines for Officials

In a decisive move regarding the funding of the trip, the Sports Ministry has clarified its stance on the expenditure of administrative officials, while the government has explicitly stated that it won't bear the travel and accommodation expenses for any elected officials from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) or various National Sports Federations (NSFs). This policy emphasizes that public funds are primarily intended for the athletes and their immediate technical support. Rohit Rajpal, who has been appointed as the Chef de Mission for the Indian contingent, also serves as a member of the IOA committee. Consequently, if this regulation is strictly applied to his role, he may be required to personally cover his own expenses for the duration of the games. The ministry has further specified that the support staff category will strictly include only essential personnel such as coaches, medical professionals, and technical assistants.

Athletics and Boxing Lead the Charge

The athletics contingent forms the largest part of the Indian squad heading to Glasgow. A total of 32 athletes, including the star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, will be part of this group. The athletics team includes 10 female athletes and will be guided by head coach Radhakrishnan Nair, who will lead the largest support staff group among all disciplines. In the boxing arena, India is sending 14 boxers with high hopes for medals. The boxing team will be under the guidance of Swedish coach Santiago Nieva. Joining him will be Mandakini Chanu, the sole female coach in the boxing squad, and Maithili Bhupatani, who will focus on the mental well-being and morale of the athletes.

Weightlifting, Swimming, and Para-Sports Representation

The weightlifting team will be led by the renowned Mirabai Chanu, with a total of 12 lifters set to compete. In the swimming category, 5 swimmers have been cleared to participate, and they will be supported by coaches Nihar Ameen and Sandeep Sejwal. Also, a substantial staff of 42 members has been approved to assist para-athletes, with the majority of this support staff dedicated to the athletics events. India is preparing to compete in 9 general categories and 5 para-sports categories during this edition of the games.

Concerns Over Potential Medal Tally Reduction

Despite the strong contingent, there are concerns regarding India's final medal count. Due to budget constraints, the Glasgow Commonwealth Games are being organized on a much smaller scale than previous editions, featuring only 10 general sports and 6 para-sports. The major challenge for India lies in the removal of several key sports where the country has traditionally dominated and secured numerous medals. Disciplines such as shooting, hockey, badminton, wrestling, and cricket have been excluded from the program this time, while this significant change in the sports lineup has led to fears that India's overall medal tally may see a decline compared to previous years.
