New Milestones Achieved in 2026
The year 2026 has been particularly significant for UPI, witnessing several new records. In May 2026, the monthly transaction volume crossed the 2,300 crore mark for the first time, with a total of 2,320 crore transactions recorded in that month alone. This was followed by another record in July 2026, where the figure reached 2,366 crore transactions. This stands as the highest monthly record in the 10-year history of UPI. Currently, an average of more than 66 crore transactions are being successfully completed every single day through the UPI platform.
Proving Strength on the Global Stage
The influence of UPI is no longer limited to India; it has established a strong presence on foreign soil as well. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recognized UPI as the world's largest real-time payment system in terms of transaction volume. By the year 2025, UPI's share in the global real-time payment transaction volume reached approximately 49 percent. Currently, UPI is operating successfully in 11 countries, including the UAE, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and the Maldives.
Preparing for the Next Decade
The government's focus is now on making UPI even more accessible. UPI has played a crucial role in reducing the digital divide in India, while the goal for the future is to connect everyone, from small entrepreneurs to people living in remote areas, with the digital economy. In the next decade, the emphasis will be on adding new users to the UPI ecosystem and focusing on further technological advancements. This strategy aims to ensure that India remains the undisputed global leader in the field of digital payments.
