The ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States in the Gulf region has brought the Strait of Hormuz into the center of global tension. While the economic consequences of the closure of this vital waterway are frequently discussed, a significant environmental risk has been largely overlooked: the impact of a massive number of ships remaining stationary for an extended period. Recent research indicates that since February, more than 1,500 commercial vessels have been anchored in the Persian or Arabian Gulf. This prolonged idling has created a major environmental hazard as marine biofouling species accumulate on the hulls of these ships.
The Threat of Biofouling and Biosecurity
Biofouling refers to the accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae, or small animals on wet surfaces like ship hulls. When these 1,500 ships eventually move as the Strait of Hormuz reopens, they could carry these organisms to various international ports. This situation creates the potential for a biosecurity super-spreader event on a global scale, while the spread of alien marine plants, animals, parasites, and diseases can have a devastating impact on local ecosystems. These invasive species often compete with native wildlife, potentially harming wild fish populations, aquaculture stocks, and various coastal industries, while the resulting environmental damage could lead to significant economic losses that extend far beyond the immediate shipping delays.
Global Shipping Choke Points
The global merchant ship traffic is the primary medium for international trade, and researchers have identified 24 critical choke points in maritime routes. While these points are essential for trade, 20 of them have alternative routes that allow shipping to be managed by diverting vessels. Although diverting ships may require more time and financial resources, it prevents vessels from being forced into long periods of inactivity, while however, there are 4 critical choke points for which no alternative routes exist. These include the Strait of Hormuz, the Oresund Strait in the Baltic Sea, the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits leading out of the Black Sea, and the Bohai Strait in the Bohai Sea. The lack of alternatives for these specific points makes their closure particularly damaging both economically and environmentally.
Iran's Conditions for Reopening
The geopolitical situation remains tense as Iran's National Security Council recently stated that the Strait of Hormuz won't be reopened until the United States improves its behavior, while this stance introduces new conditions that affect any potential negotiations regarding the waterway and the movement of vessels. Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, the Secretary of the Security Council and a commander of the Revolutionary Guard, emphasized these conditions in statements broadcast by Iranian media. He stated that the United States must stop threatening Iran and must permanently end the ongoing wars against Iran and its armed allies in the region. Previously, Iran had claimed to be nearing an agreement with Oman regarding the control of the Strait of Hormuz, which is situated between the two nations. The current deadlock continues to keep over 1,500 ships stationary, further exacerbating the biofouling crisis and the risk of an international environmental disaster.
