The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, has unveiled a series of significant welfare initiatives aimed at providing financial relief to the citizens of the state. In a major announcement made in the state assembly on Monday, the Chief Minister introduced several freebie schemes, including the provision of three free LPG cylinders annually for economically disadvantaged families. This move is part of a broader strategy to support households struggling with rising costs of living and fuel prices. The government has also expanded the scope of free bus travel, extending the benefit to transgender individuals and broadening the categories of buses available for women.
Annapoorni Super Six Scheme and LPG Benefits
Chief Minister Joseph Vijay detailed the new Annapoorni Super Six scheme, which is scheduled to be launched during the Pongal festival next year, while 5 lakh rupees will be eligible to receive three free LPG cylinders every year. 30 crore families across Tamil Nadu will benefit from this welfare measure. To ensure transparency and direct benefit, the cost of the three cylinders purchased by eligible beneficiaries will be credited directly into their bank accounts. This scheme is expected to place an annual financial burden of approximately 4,000 crore rupees on the state exchequer.
Addressing the assembly, the Chief Minister explained the rationale behind this decision, citing the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region. He noted that the conflict has led to a shortage of cooking gas cylinders and a subsequent surge in prices, which has placed an additional economic strain on families, while cM Vijay stated that despite the state's financial constraints, the government decided to bear the cost of the cylinders to protect the welfare of the public and fulfill the promises made to the people. It's noteworthy that during the election campaign, Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), had initially promised to provide six free LPG cylinders per year.
Expansion of Free Bus Travel for Women and Transgender People
In another landmark decision, the Chief Minister announced the inclusion of transgender individuals in the state's free bus travel scheme. Also, the existing Vetri Payana Thittam (Victory Journey Scheme) for women has seen a significant expansion in its scope. Previously, the free travel facility for women was restricted to ordinary and hill route buses within metropolitan and urban areas, with a distance limit of 40 km. The scheme didn't cover Express, LSS (Limited Stop Service), Deluxe, or suburban services, while however, under the newly expanded policy, women will now be able to travel for free not only in ordinary buses but also in Express, LSS, and Deluxe government services. This facility will also be extended to inter-district bus services, providing greater mobility to women across the state.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the freedom of travel for women is the foundation of their economic independence and the progress of their families. He highlighted that the new scheme allows women to use Express, LSS, and Deluxe government buses in metropolitan and urban areas, as well as ordinary fare buses in suburban (Mofussil) and hilly regions, while this comprehensive expansion is designed to ensure that no woman in Tamil Nadu is deprived of opportunities due to transportation costs.
Financial Impact and Implementation
The expansion of the free bus service, rebranded as Vetri Payanam (Victorious Journey), is set to be implemented from October 2, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. CM Vijay reiterated that the core objective of his government is the principle of social justice. By removing financial barriers to transportation, the government aims to empower women and marginalized communities. This expansion of the bus travel scheme is projected to cost the state government an additional 6,000 crore rupees annually. Combined with the LPG scheme, these initiatives represent a massive investment in social welfare, reflecting the government's commitment to its electoral mandates and the well-being of its citizens.
