In a significant political upheaval in Tamil Nadu, the main opposition party, AIADMK, is witnessing a major internal split following the recent assembly election results. The resentment against the party's General Secretary and former Chief Minister, Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), has surfaced openly, while a powerful faction within the party, led by senior leaders S P Velumani and C V Shanmugam, has officially announced its support for Chief Minister Vijay's party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). This move marks a dramatic shift in the state's political landscape, as a substantial portion of the opposition has decided to align with the treasury benches.

Internal Strife and Leadership Crisis in AIADMK

The internal turmoil reached a boiling point on Tuesday when senior leader C V Shanmugam stated that the decision to support TVK was made by a majority of AIADMK MLAs, while following a heavy defeat in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, this faction declared that they would back Vijay's TVK to ensure stability. Shanmugam further revealed that the MLAs belonging to this faction are scheduled to meet Chief Minister Vijay to formalize their support for the government. This development is seen as a direct challenge to Edappadi K Palaniswami's authority, as his strategic decisions are being questioned by his own party colleagues.

Controversy Over Alleged DMK Alliance Proposal

Explaining the reasons behind the rebellion, C V Shanmugam alleged that Edappadi K Palaniswami had proposed forming a government with the support of the DMK. However, this proposal was vehemently rejected by the majority of the legislators. Shanmugam emphasized that the AIADMK was founded 53 years ago specifically to oppose the DMK, and aligning with them would mean the end of the party's identity. The MLAs argued that such a move would lead to the total erosion of the AIADMK's base. Consequently, the faction decided to distance itself from EPS's leadership and extend support to the TVK government instead.

Tussle Over the Election of Legislature Party Leader

The split became evident during the first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly when two separate groups claimed leadership of the AIADMK Legislature Party. While one group continues to back EPS, the other has rallied behind former ministers S P Velumani and C V Shanmugam. Both sides submitted separate letters to the Protem Speaker, M V Karuppaiah, on Monday. The Velumani faction claims that in a meeting held on May 9, he was elected as the leader of the legislature party, with G Hari as the deputy leader and C Vijay Bhaskar as the whip. This dual claim has created a procedural dilemma within the assembly.

Speaker Election and the Upcoming Floor Test

Amidst this political drama, TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday. Prabhakar, who won from the Thousand Lights constituency by defeating DMK's Ezhilan Naganathan, filed his nomination in the presence of Chief Minister Vijay. His unopposed election is being viewed as the first successful legislative test for the Vijay administration, while the Chief Minister now faces a floor test to prove his majority by May 13. With the support of the AIADMK faction, it's widely expected that Vijay will comfortably pass the floor test and solidify his position.

The AIADMK currently stands divided into two distinct camps. The EPS camp includes leaders like O S Manian, Thalaivai N Sundaram, K C Karuppannan, Maragatham Kumaravel, and Agri S S Krishnamurthy. On the other hand, the Velumani-Shanmugam faction is supported by heavyweights such as Natham R Viswanathan, R Kamaraj, Arunmozhithevan, KV Veeramani, and KP Anbazhagan. While Palaniswami has dismissed reports of a split as misinformation, the conflicting letters submitted to the Protem Speaker tell a different story, while the upcoming floor test on May 13 will be the ultimate decider of the political future of these factions.
