Tata Motors, which currently holds a dominant position in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, is now fully prepared to bring its most ambitious and premium project to life. The upcoming flagship electric SUV from the brand, known as the Tata Avinya, has been spotted testing on Indian roads for the very first time. This sighting of the car in a fully camouflaged avatar has created a significant stir within the automobile industry. Positioned at the very top of Tata's existing EV portfolio, this vehicle is set to mark the beginning of a new premium era for the brand.
First Glimpse of Tata's Most Luxurious Car
Although the testing model was completely covered in camouflage, the sleek and futuristic body shape of the car was clearly visible to onlookers. The front of the vehicle features a sealed-off face with a closed grille, which is a signature characteristic of modern electric vehicles. On top of that, vertically stacked lighting elements can be seen on the edges of the bumper. It's highly anticipated that the production version will feature extremely thin LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). The car's long wheelbase, combined with a short front overhang and a roofline that gently slopes towards the rear, gives it a highly aerodynamic and sporty appearance.
Luxury Features and Aerodynamic Design
A closer look at the side profile reveals large aerodynamic alloy wheels and wide body cladding that adds to its strong yet sophisticated stance. The car is equipped with modern flush door handles that retract into the bodywork, providing a very clean and easy look. However, the outside rear-view mirrors (ORVMs) are mounted in a traditional manner on the doors. The presence of large rear doors is a direct indication that the cabin of this electric car will be extremely rear-seat friendly and airy, focusing on passenger comfort and space.
Based on the JLR Platform
The Tata Avinya project has undergone significant technical changes over the past few months, while while there were earlier reports suggesting it would be built on JLR's architecture, Tata Motors has now confirmed that the first model will be based on the Freelander platform manufactured by Chery-JLR. The utilization of this platform ensures that the car's handling, structural integrity, and overall premium feel will be of international standards, competing with global luxury electric vehicles.
Battery, Range, and Launch Timeline
While the company has not yet officially disclosed the technical specifications, various automobile reports suggest that the Avinya could be equipped with a large battery pack ranging from 65 kWh to 80 kWh in capacity. This substantial battery pack is expected to provide an excellent driving range on a single charge. The first model in this series is likely to enter the market under the name Avinya X. Tata Motors is planning to develop this not just as a single car, but as an entire family of premium EVs. This flagship model is expected to make its official market debut by the year 2027.
