The scheduling of a major political rally right in the middle of the peak festive season has triggered widespread concern and anxiety among the business community in the national capital of Delhi. The prominent trade body, Chamber of Trade and Industry, popularly known as CTI, has written a formal and urgent letter to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, earnestly requesting him to postpone the upcoming opposition alliance rally scheduled for November one at Delhi historic Ramlila Maidan to November ten. This strong stance and appeal from the trader organization has emerged out of a deep and genuine apprehension that this high-profile political gathering could severely disrupt the core shopping season of Diwali, potentially inflicting a massive financial loss of up to ten thousand crores of rupees upon the business community, while cTI has emphasized that market activities and customer footfall traditionally witness an unprecedented surge approximately one week prior to major festivals, making the current timing of this political rally a matter of grave concern for traders who are heavily dependent on this peak business window.

Festive season and twenty-five thousand crore overall business

According to the comprehensive data and figures shared by the top leadership of the trade organization, Delhi witnesses an enormous business turnover of approximately twenty-five thousand crores of rupees across various commercial sectors around the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, which falls on November six this year. This vast commercial scope encompasses numerous vital and high-value sectors, including gold and silver jewellery, electronics, garments, utensils, dry fruits, sweets, automobiles, property, and various attractive gift items. Immediately following this period, the grand festival of lights, Diwali, will be celebrated with immense enthusiasm on November eight this year, which will subsequently be followed by the sacred festival of Bhai Dooj on November ten. Consequently, the entire duration starting from the end of October up to the second week of November constitutes the busiest and most lucrative earning season of the entire year for the traders of the country. CTI has explicitly pointed out that markets generally experience a massive rush of customers starting about a week before the festivals, and any disruption during this crucial period can directly shatter the backbone of the trading community.

Already facing three thousand crore loss in October month

In accordance with the detailed assessments and ground-level evaluations conducted by the Chamber of Trade and Industry, the traders of Delhi have already had to endure massive business shocks during the month of October. The organization has strongly claimed that due to recurring political rallies, public demonstrations, and frequent road closures across prominent locations such as Connaught Place, India Gate, and central Delhi, traders have already suffered an estimated loss of approximately three thousand crores of rupees in the month of October alone. The continuous disruptions caused by these protests and road blockages have severely hindered the smooth movement of goods across wholesale markets, resulting in a noticeable decline in the daily footfall of retail customers at local shops. Having already incurred such a massive deficit on the very threshold of the festive season, the scheduling of yet another massive political rally in the first week of November threatens to completely destabilize the economic viability of local businesses, prompting this urgent appeal.

Twenty major markets surrounding Ramlila Maidan at risk

CTI has placed special emphasis in its official communication on the crucial fact that there are approximately twenty major wholesale and retail markets situated within a five-kilometer radius of the Ramlila Maidan, which are bound to be directly impacted by the rally. The long and prominent list of these critical markets includes historic commercial hubs such as Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Bhagirath Palace, Khari Baoli, Kashmiri Gate, Naya Bazar, Mori Gate, Kinari Bazaar, Dariba, Daryaganj, Ajmeri Gate, Jama Masjid, Karol Bagh, and Azad Market, which serve as foundational pillars of Indian commerce. The organization has underscored the vital reality that all these markets don't merely operate on a local scale, but instead supply essential goods in wholesale quantities to different parts of the country. Consequently, extensive traffic diversions, barricading of major arterial routes, and potential restrictions on public transport during the rally could severely paralyze the daily operations and functioning of these prime commercial markets, ultimately creating a negative ripple effect on nationwide supply chains.

Severe inconvenience to buyers and merchants arriving at railway stations

Brijesh Goyal, the Chairman of CTI, has also expressed deep and serious concern regarding the potential severe inconveniences that could be faced by countless traders and long-distance buyers arriving in Delhi from various other states via the heavily congested routes of Old Delhi Railway Station and New Delhi Railway Station. During this special festive season, merchants from every corner of the nation travel to the national capital to make bulk purchases for their respective regions, and if the traffic management around railway stations collapses or routes are sealed, the arrival of these outside traders and the transport of their merchandise will become nearly impossible. CTI has made a passionate appeal to all major political parties, and particularly to the opposition alliance, to completely refrain from organizing large-scale rallies in prime commercial zones until the festive period comes to a complete close. In this regard, a sincere request has been put forth to the top leadership of the Congress party, a premier constituent of the opposition alliance, and specifically to leader Rahul Gandhi, urging them to seriously consider organizing this rally only after November ten, ensuring that the livelihood and festive spirit of the nation hardworking traders remain protected.
