Trump clarified on Monday that under no circumstances would Netanyahu be arrested on American soil. This statement comes as a direct counter to Mamdani's earlier remarks, where the Mayor suggested that legal options were being explored to arrest the Israeli leader if he were to visit New York City. The Controversy Surrounding Mamdani's Statement
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, in a conversation with The New York Times, labeled Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal and stated that his place is in The Hague. Mamdani revealed that his administration is in constant communication with the New York City Law Department to determine the extent of local authority if Netanyahu enters the city. He emphasized that his office would take whatever action the law permits within the jurisdiction of New York City. However, he also clarified that his office isn't attempting to create new local laws specifically for this purpose but is looking at existing legal frameworks to uphold international standards as he perceives them.
Trump's Strong Defense of Netanyahu
Responding to the Mayor's stance, Donald Trump asserted that Benjamin Netanyahu wouldn't be arrested in the United States in any way, shape, or form, while trump framed Netanyahu's actions as a necessary struggle against the Islamic Republic of Iran. He pointed out that Iran has recently been responsible for the deaths of 52,000 innocent protesters and has been taking the lives of American soldiers and others for years. Trump argued that the focus of arrests should be on those who have pushed Iran into this unprecedented period of death and destruction, rather than the leader of a democratic ally. He further noted that these issues should have been resolved by previous presidents long ago.
Israel's Reaction and the ICC Warrant
The Israeli Prime Minister's Office (PMO) also weighed in, strongly criticizing Mamdani's remarks and dismissing the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) as fake. Israel described the ICC as a sham court and argued that it has no jurisdiction over Israel or the United States, while it's important to note that the United States isn't a member of the Rome Statute, which means it has no legal obligation to enforce ICC warrants or hand individuals over to the court.
