The political landscape in Uttar Pradesh is beginning to heat up as the state approaches the next assembly elections. Political parties are already in the process of formulating their strategies to gain an edge over their rivals. In this context, the Congress party has developed a comprehensive master plan aimed at securing a significant presence in the state. According to sources, there are strong indications of an alliance between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) for the upcoming assembly polls. To ensure a strong position during the seat-sharing negotiations, Congress is completing its internal preparations to present a data-backed case at the discussion table.
The 160-Seat Survey and Categorization
Congress has conducted an extensive survey across Uttar Pradesh to identify potential seats where the party can perform effectively. Based on this survey, the party has shortlisted 160 seats and divided them into three distinct categories to streamline its strategy. This categorization is intended to provide a clear picture of the party's strengths and weaknesses before entering formal talks with Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party.
- Category A: This category includes seats where the Congress believes it has a very high probability of winning. These are the strongholds where the party's local leadership and organizational structure are robust.
- Category B: This category consists of seats where the alliance with the Samajwadi Party and the prevailing social equations are favorable. The party believes that with the combined support of SP and Congress voters, these seats can be won comfortably.
- Category C: The third category includes seats that have historically been weak for both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party. In previous elections, both parties have struggled to make an impact on these seats, and they are considered challenging territories.
District-Wise Strategy and Key Focus Areas
The Congress party's strategy isn't just about the number of seats but also about its geographical footprint across the state. The party aims to mark its presence in every major district. Specifically, the plan involves contesting at least 2 seats in every large district and at least 1 seat in smaller districts. This approach is designed to ensure that the Congress remains a visible and relevant force throughout Uttar Pradesh.
Plus, the party is placing a special emphasis on regions like Amethi and Rae Bareli, which have traditionally been associated with the Gandhi family. On top of that, the Congress wants to secure more seats in the constituencies currently held by its Members of Parliament. During the previous Lok Sabha elections, Akhilesh Yadav had initially offered 17 seats to the Congress, despite the party's demand for 37. Out of those 17 seats, the Congress managed to win 6. Given this background, the upcoming negotiations for the assembly elections are expected to be intense as both parties seek to maximize their share.
Akhilesh Yadav's Stance and the SP Strategy
On the other side of the alliance, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is actively working to energize his party workers and organizational structure. He has been consistently communicating to his allies that the Samajwadi Party is the primary force capable of challenging the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. Recently, Akhilesh made a significant statement regarding the party's readiness, asserting that the organization and workers are fully prepared across all seats in the state.
Akhilesh Yadav has also sent a clear message to potential alliance partners, stating that any party contesting alongside the Samajwadi Party will benefit from its strong and well-oiled organizational machinery. His current slogan, "The issue isn't about seats, but about victory," reflects his focus on the ultimate goal of defeating the ruling party rather than getting bogged down in numerical disputes. This philosophy suggests that while seat-sharing talks might be tough, the primary objective for the SP remains the collective success of the alliance.
