The United States appears to be moving toward another significant military engagement as reports emerge regarding a comprehensive master plan prepared by the Pentagon for a potential strike against Cuba. According to various reports, the US Department of Defense has been strategically deploying weapons and personnel for several months in preparation for this operation. The final execution of this plan now rests solely on the approval of President Donald Trump, while if the President grants his authorization, this would mark the third major military offensive launched by the United States within the year 2026.

Pentagon Finalizes Operation Details

As reported by Politico, the Pentagon has meticulously drafted the operational framework for the mission in Cuba. This strategic plan has been formally submitted to President Donald Trump for his review and final decision, while the potential approval of this plan could lead to the immediate commencement of hostilities between the United States and Cuba. This development comes at a time when the US military has already been active in two other conflicts earlier this year, signaling a highly aggressive foreign policy stance in 2026.

The shift toward military action follows a period where the Trump administration initially hoped that stringent economic sanctions would trigger a domestic coup or a change in leadership within Cuba. However, despite intense economic and political pressure, the Communist Party government in Cuba has remained resilient. Recognizing that sanctions alone have failed to destabilize the existing regime, the administration is now seriously considering direct military intervention as a viable alternative.

Strategic Military Buildup in the Caribbean

For a considerable duration, the United States has been steadily increasing its military presence in the Caribbean waters. A significant milestone in this buildup occurred in May when the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group arrived in the Caribbean region. This formidable naval force is accompanied by several guided-missile destroyers and cruisers, all of which possess the capability to conduct high-precision missile strikes against land-based targets. Plus, US drones and surveillance aircraft have been reported as highly active around Cuban territory for several months, conducting reconnaissance and monitoring movements.

Security Concerns and Geopolitical Rivalries

The motivations behind a potential strike were highlighted during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed grave concerns to President Trump, stating that an unstable nation in such close proximity to the United States poses a significant threat to national security, while rubio emphasized that the current state of instability and the numerous challenges within Cuba can't be ignored. He argued that the proximity of the island makes its internal turmoil a direct concern for American safety.

Another critical factor driving this military posturing is the increasing influence of China in Cuba. In recent times, China has secured several deals and expanded its footprint on the island, which Washington views with suspicion, while following the consolidation of influence over Venezuela, the United States now appears focused on asserting control or neutralizing threats in Cuba. This mission is seen as a strategic move to curb foreign interference in the Western Hemisphere.

Cuba's Defensive Capabilities and Strategy

Understanding Cuba's military strength is essential to assessing the potential conflict. Cuba's primary defensive doctrine is known as the War of All the People policy. This strategy dictates that in the event of a foreign invasion, the defense of the nation isn't limited to the formal military. Instead, the entire population, including ordinary citizens, local militias, and paramilitary forces, would be mobilized to participate in the conflict. This approach aims to create an environment where an occupying force faces resistance at every level of society.

In terms of formal military numbers, Cuba currently maintains approximately 50000 active-duty soldiers. This force is supported by 39000 reserve personnel and a substantial paramilitary wing consisting of about 90000 members. Similar to the military structure seen in Iran, the Cuban government has organized its forces into decentralized units. In a war scenario, these individual military units are empowered to make independent tactical decisions, making the command structure difficult to dismantle, while historically, Cuba is renowned for its expertise in guerrilla warfare, a tactic that famously challenged US interests during the 1970s and remains a core part of their military identity today.
