VD Satheesan, the designated Chief Minister of Kerala, is scheduled to take the oath of office today, marking a significant transition in the state's political landscape. This ceremony follows a series of high-level discussions within the United Democratic Front (UDF) to finalize the composition of the new government. On Sunday, Satheesan officially announced the names of the members who will be joining his council of ministers, setting the stage for the formal swearing-in ceremony where he and his cabinet colleagues will assume their respective charges.

Strategic Cabinet Selection and Social Balance

During the announcement, VD Satheesan emphasized that the selection of ministers was a meticulous process conducted in consultation with all alliance partners. He highlighted that the final list was prepared with a strong focus on maintaining social and regional balance within the cabinet. The designated Chief Minister noted that representing various sections of society and different geographical regions of Kerala was a priority to ensure inclusive governance. The new cabinet under Satheesan's leadership will feature five ministers from the Congress party, including prominent senior leaders who bring extensive administrative experience to the table.

Key Appointments from Congress and IUML

The Congress party has nominated senior leaders Ramesh Chennithala, K Muraleedharan, and Sunny Joseph to be part of the new ministry. Their inclusion is seen as a move to provide stability and veteran leadership to the incoming administration, while simultaneously, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key partner in the UDF, has also finalized its representation. IUML chief Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal confirmed in a press conference that the party has decided to appoint five of its leaders to ministerial positions, while the designated ministers from IUML include PK Kunhalikutty, N Shamsudheen, KM Shaji, PK Basheer, and VE Abdul Gafoor.

Legislative Roles and UDF Strategy

Beyond the cabinet, the UDF has also made crucial decisions regarding the leadership of the state assembly. Senior legislator Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has been nominated for the post of Assembly Speaker, while Shanimol Usman has been designated to serve as the Deputy Speaker, while vD Satheesan reflected on the party's performance, noting that the Congress secured 63 seats in the assembly, which he described as one of the party's most significant victories in the state. He acknowledged that while there were many qualified and capable leaders within the party, the constraints of cabinet size and the need for regional and social representation meant that some deserving individuals couldn't be included in the final list.

Finalizing Portfolios and Official Notification

The process of allocating portfolios among the alliance partners is nearing completion. Satheesan mentioned that while most discussions have been resolved, a few minor matters remain pending and are expected to be settled shortly, while once the list is fully finalized, it will be formally presented to the Governor for approval. Following the Governor's consent, the appointments and portfolio assignments will be officially notified through the government gazette, formalizing the structure of the new Kerala administration under VD Satheesan's leadership.
