Accident / 16 workers dead, 5 injured after truck overturns in Maha's Jalgaon: Police

Mumbai: As many as 16 people were killed and five others injured after a truck overturned in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra on Sunday.

The tragic incident took place near Kingaon village in Yawal taluka last night when their papaya-laden truck overturned near a temple.

All the deceased were labourers from Abhoda, Kerhala and Raver in the district, police said on Monday. Five of them suffered serious injuries and are admitted to a rural hospital where they are undergoing medical treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over what he said the "heart-wrenching accident" and offered condolences to the bereaved families.

"Heart-wrenching truck accident in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest," he said in a tweet.

In another road mishap on Sunday, 14 people, including a child and eight women, were killed and four others - all children - injured after a mini bus collided with a truck in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district.

The tragic incident took place at around 4 am near Madarpur village in Veldurti Mandal when the bus, carrying a group of pilgrims from Madanapalle in Chittoor district, was on its way to Ajmer in Rajasthan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed grief over the loss of lives in the Andhra Pradesh mishap and prayed for the recovery of the injured persons.

"The road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district is saddening. In this hour of sadness, my thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. I hope that the injured recover at the earliest," he had said.
