IND vs SA: Team India's journey in World Cup 2023 ended after coming close to the title. Now his next chance for the title will come in June 2024, when there will be a T20 World Cup battle between 20 teams. That T20 World Cup will probably be the last tournament in which many big legends of Team India will be seen. After that, a period of change will begin, for which many players are already staking claim. This will be the time when future captains will be groomed. Team India definitely has some contenders but some other youngsters also need to be groomed but the decision taken by the selectors for the team selected for the South Africa tour has surprised.

On Thursday 30 November, the BCCI Senior Men's Selection Committee announced the ODI, Test and T20 squads for the South Africa tour. There was a lot of discussion about the selection or ignoring of some players in all three squads. The captaincy of the T20 team was at the center of most discussion whether Rohit Sharma would return or not? Rohit took a break from this series and the selectors decided to make Suryakumar Yadav the captain.

Surprised by making Jadeja vice-captain

In the absence of Rohit and Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav is commanding the team in the ongoing T20 series against Australia. Ruturaj Gaikwad was made the vice-captain for the first 3 matches of this series and Shreyas Iyer was made the vice-captain for the last 2 matches. Both these players are part of the squad for all three formats on the South Africa tour. Despite this, instead of choosing either of these two, the selection committee surprised by appointing experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as the vice-captain for the T20 series. This decision has raised questions on the thinking of the selectors and their vision for the future of Team India.

Why is this decision of BCCI under question?

The first question was being raised about Jadeja's presence in this format because Akshar Patel did not get a place for this series. Still, the bigger question is on the decision to make Jadeja the vice-captain. Even before this, Jadeja was made the vice-captain in one or two series and even then this decision was beyond comprehension. There are two big reasons for questioning this decision - firstly, Jadeja does not have much experience as a captain. When he got the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings in IPL, what happened to the team at that time is also not hidden from anyone.

An even bigger objection is that why such opportunities are not used to prepare future leaders? Anyway, Ravindra Jadeja will not become the captain of Team India in the coming years. In such a situation, Shreyas Iyer or Ruturaj Gaikwad should have been retained for this role and they should have been groomed. Anyway, Shreyas and Rituraj have more leadership experience in IPL and domestic cricket than Jadeja. In such a situation, the selectors have shown backward thinking by not selecting him.
