Australia Open 2024: Belarus star Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her Australian Open title with a stunning win over China's Qianwen Zheng in the women's final on Saturday, January 27. The world No. 2 won her second Grand Slam career title with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Won over world number 15 Zheng at Rod Laver Arena. Journey to the final

Sabalenka, 25, displayed sensational dominance at Melbourne Park over the past two weeks. To reach the final, they had to face top 10 ranked Coco Gauff and Barbora Krejcikova, but did not lose a single set in the entire tournament. Zheng, on the other hand, played her first Grand Slam final after not facing any seed challenges en route to the final. The Chinese star had also reached the quarterfinals of the US Open last year, where she was defeated by Sabalenka.

Sabalenka created history

Since Victoria Azarenka's victory over Li Na in 2013, Sabalenka became the first player to successfully defend an Australian Open title and win her first major title in women's singles. It took 76 minutes for the Belarusian star to fend off Zheng's challenge. Zheng will enter the top ten of the WTA singles rankings while Sabalenka will finish second behind leader Iga Swiatek. Meanwhile, Jan Zielinski-Hsieh Su-Wei claimed the Australian Open 2024 mixed doubles title on Saturday. The world number three pair defeated Nia Skupski-Desiree Krawczyk 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 in the final at Melbourne Park.
