The political atmosphere in the national capital has reached a boiling point as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a fierce verbal offensive against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, while the confrontation stems from the ongoing protests organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The BJP has issued a stern warning, stating that Rahul Gandhi must stop his misbehavior and realize that the country is governed by the Parliament and not by the agitation on the streets, while this statement comes at a time when Delhi is witnessing massive security deployments and large-scale detentions of protesters demanding the resignation of the SIR and CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Massive Detentions and Police Action in Delhi
The Delhi Police has intensified its crackdown on supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) who have gathered in various parts of the city. According to official reports, more than 3000 people have been detained so far during the anti-CEC protests. The police action has been widespread, with supporters being picked up from different localities across the capital, while in a significant move, nearly 200 CJP supporters were detained at the Connaught Place Outer Circle while they were attempting to march towards Jantar Mantar. The scale of the detention reflects the intensity of the protest and the government's resolve to maintain order.
Among those taken into custody are prominent CJP leaders, including the party's founder Abhijit Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurabh Das. These three leaders were reportedly detained directly from their flight at the Delhi Airport, preventing them from reaching the protest site. The police have been on high alert, monitoring every movement to ensure that the situation doesn't escalate further. The detention of over 1500 protesters was reported in the initial stages, which quickly rose to over 3000 as the day progressed.
Unprecedented Security Arrangements and Infrastructure Blocks
To prevent the protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar, the Delhi Police and paramilitary forces have turned the area into a fortress. More than 30000 personnel from the police and paramilitary forces have been deployed across the city. Heavy barricading has been placed on all roads leading to Jantar Mantar. In an extraordinary measure, nails have been fixed on the roads to stop vehicles from proceeding. The entire area is under constant surveillance through a network of CCTV cameras and drones.
The security measures have also impacted the city's infrastructure and daily life. Entry and exit facilities at 45 metro stations have been closed to restrict the movement of protesters. On top of that, internet services have been suspended within a 4 kilometer radius of Jantar Mantar to prevent the spread of information and coordination among the agitators. At all Delhi borders, the police and the Border Security Force (BSF) have been stationed to check every vehicle entering the capital. Every individual entering through the main routes is being thoroughly inspected by the police personnel.
BJP's Scathing Attack on Rahul Gandhi and Congress
The BJP has not held back in its criticism of Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of creating a false narrative against India. The party stated that Rahul Gandhi can't tolerate the progress of the country and is working against the national interest. "Rahul Gandhi, stop your misbehavior. The country has not bowed down to conspiracies and won't bow down in the future," the BJP remarked. The ruling party further alleged that Rahul Gandhi doesn't respect constitutional institutions and is using protests as a weapon after facing electoral defeats.
The BJP also brought up the history of the Congress party, mentioning that they had appointed several Election Commissioners as Governors in the past. They criticized Rahul Gandhi for allegedly lying about meeting the President and told him not to lecture them on the Emergency, reminding him that it was the Congress that imposed the Emergency on the country. The BJP emphasized that frustrated individuals who have lost elections are now causing trouble for the people of Delhi.
Ravi Shankar Prasad Targets Arvind Kejriwal
BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also took the opportunity to target Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while referring to Kejriwal's mention of the Dandi March, Prasad called it a grave matter. He pointed out that Kejriwal is currently embroiled in a liquor scam and shouldn't hurt the soul of Mahatma Gandhi by comparing his movement to the historic Dandi March, while prasad questioned why all of Kejriwal's former associates from the Anna movement have left him, noting that they all moved away one by one.
Support from Former Bureaucrats and Humanitarian Gestures
In a significant development, a group of 124 former IAS and IFS officers issued an open letter to the citizens of the country. In this letter, they strongly defended the Election Commission and the SIR process, providing a counter-narrative to the protesters' demands. This collective support from former high-ranking officials adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate over the SIR and CEC.
Amidst the tension, a humanitarian aspect also emerged. A Delhi Police official shared that Abhijit Dipke, the founder of CJP, was informed about the tragic demise of his grandmother while he was in custody. The police claimed to have provided this information with full sensitivity and even offered him all possible assistance to travel to his hometown for the funeral rites on humanitarian grounds. This gesture was highlighted to show the professional yet sensitive approach of the police force during the detentions.
