The construction of the Defense Office Complex is part of the Central Vista Project. Under this project, the entire area of ​​Rajpath is to be redeveloped along with the construction of a new Parliament building and a new Central Secretariat.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Thursday that the redevelopment work of Central Vista Avenue, extending from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, would be completed within two and a half months. According to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the project will be ready in time to host the Republic Day parade in the year 2022. Puri insisted that the winter session of Parliament would be held in the new Parliament building next year.

Puri was speaking at the inauguration of the Defense Office complexes at Kasturba Gandhi Marg and Africa Avenue in the capital Delhi. These complexes have been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The new defense office complexes will provide working space for about 7,000 officers from the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Central Vista project will be completed in two and a half months

"I would like to assure you (Prime Minister) that the redevelopment work of Central Vista Avenue will be completed in two-and-a-half months where (next year) the Republic Day parade will take place," Puri said, referring to the new defense office complexes, he said. Their work was completed in just 12 months. He said that the new and sustainable construction technology LGSF (Light Gauge Steel Frame) has been used in the construction of both the Defense Office Complexes.

“The minimum time prescribed for the construction of such buildings under LGSF technology is 24 months but it was completed in 12 months,” he said. Puri said that 8,782 metric tonnes of steel and 7,920 metric tonnes of cement have been used in the construction work. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Defense Ministry office complex at Africa Avenue on 16 September, following which the process of shifting the staff is going ahead. The transfer of offices will free up 50 acres of land for the development of Central Vista. The Defense Ministry will free up 9.2 lakh sq ft of space in these barracks and 9.6 lakh sq ft in two new multi-storeyed complexes spread over a total area of ​​13 acres.

Africa Avenue spread over four blocks

The Africa Avenue campus is spread over four blocks and has been given 5.08 lakh square feet of space. While KG Marg has three blocks and an office area of ​​4.52 lakh square feet. As part of the Central Vista project, new office complexes have been constructed at a cost of Rs 775 crore provided by the Ministry of Defence. Both the complexes together have parking space for 1,500 cars.

According to the information, the seven-storey office complex built on Africa Avenue will have only the offices of the Ministry of Defense. At the same time, the 8-storey building built on Kasturba Gandhi Marg will be used temporarily for the office of the Ministry of Defense besides Transport Bhawan and Shram Shakti Bhawan. They will be transferred from there after their new offices are ready in the Central Secretariat premises.
