Political activities in Delhi have intensified following the announcement of the dates for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections. Both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have started showcasing their strength for the upcoming polls. According to the schedule, the elections for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will be held on April 29, 2026.
Election Schedule and Key Nomination Dates
The MCD will issue the official notification regarding the elections today. The nomination process is set to begin shortly, and candidates can file their papers until April 23. Following the withdrawal of nominations on April 23, voting will take place on April 29 if necessary. A special meeting of the House has been convened on April 29 specifically for the conduct of these elections.
Standing Committee Polls and Special House Meeting
In addition to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts, elections for three vacant seats of the Standing Committee will also be held on the same day, April 29. The corporation has integrated these polls into the schedule of the special House meeting to ensure all vacant positions are filled simultaneously.
Majority Figures and Political Landscape
The numerical strength in the MCD House suggests a competitive battle. According to sources, the BJP currently holds approximately 141 votes in the MCD House. Since the majority mark required is 137 votes, the BJP is claiming it has the necessary strength to secure the Mayor's post. The party is expected to finalize its candidates for the positions of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and the Standing Committee members very soon.
Tenure of Mayor and the Rotation System
The term for the post of MCD Mayor is one year, and it operates based on a rotation system, while the upcoming election is considered to be for the fifth or sixth term. While AAP had boycotted some elections last year, the current political atmosphere indicates a high-stakes involvement from both sides as the new term approaches.
